Hello to all from Australia,Love the site by the way,

I have an idea for the 400ex,i'm thinking of removing the front tyres and blanking off the valve hole, then redrilling a new valve hole on the other side of the rim, so that I can then get a bit more offset(wider wheelbase) on the front.

Has anybody done this?.
Any ideas on the pro's and con's of doing this.

Thanks in advance Fullysic400[COLOR=red

I don't think it's a good idea as it will adversely affect handling. It may be minor, it may be major, I don't know. I haven't experienced it first hand. There's other's here smarter than I in that aspect that can explain it better.

Where abouts in Australia do you call home? A buddy of mine has been here (U.S.) for a while and is headed back for a while to see his family.

I guy at the local track here did that and he said he likes it. I don't rememer if it was on 400ex front wheels or not, but I remember him talking about it

Home for me would be northwest West Australia,Thanks for the replies.
The main reason i'm looking at doing this is I mostly ride flat track, flat out and thought it might give a bit more stability at full noise.

Given your conditions, then sure, it would probably suit your needs.

You're a long way from where my buddy is from, back towards the southeast part of the country.

The Finished product should look like so :

Look elsewhere on the forum for a topic on SAI (steering axis Inclination) and rim Offsets . Very helpful .

Personally I would rather have gone the spacer route , but if this is what you want to do , then she should look like this .

i was thinking of doing the exact same thing. My plan was to put valve stems in backwards in the original holes and put in new ones on the other side. that way i can change them back if pretty easily if i wanted to.

I went the spacer route cheaper and you can always take them off. Plus I don't jump anymore(axles cost to much.)

I've done this on every sport quad i've owned... never had ANY problems...

DO IT... it looks good, just break the tire down, pull the old vavle stem out, put one back in backwards, re-drill another hole for one on the other side (*******on the opp side of the wheel for better balance******) and reinflate and ur good to go!:D :D :D

a guy races flat track on a blaster in ohio and he flipped the rims around and used spacers, also had lowering kit put on it. it was sweet lookin, the nerf bars were barely off the ground. when i rode it the swinger scraped the curb pulling into drive way it was so low. but it turned like it was on rails

i still dont understand why you guys do this it puts alot of stress on the ball joints in the a arms and messes the geometry up
but hey if you want to go ahead no offense but if you have a 2007 400ex i would think you have the money to put aftermarket a arms on it.....

I dont think i would want my front calipers exposed like that. I hope your up front cause you are going to beat the hell out of your calibers if your not.

Simply flipping the wheels around doesn't change the steering geometry, and doesn't stress the ball joints anymore than running them in the stock offset. It will put more stress on the wheel bearings because the bearings are the point where wheel forces are transfered onto the spindels and into the rest of the suspension.

Flipping the wheel offset is nothing new, I wouldn't reccomend it on stock wheels because there is no taper on the backside of the wheel for the lugnuts and proper centering of the the wheel.

ZSK-- all i know is it breaks something in that area when you flip them and put them through he!! i havent done this personally or seen any of my friends do it but ive seen a few people DNF due to the "flipping of the wheel"
thank you for correcting me on the stress point i dont want to give false info to people on the site i knew it could break something in that area. i was just a inch or two off!!
the only way to correctly widen a quad is aftermarket axle and aftermarket a arms i do know that much. end of discussion.

Thanks for all the positive + negative feedback guys,it was just what I was after.
Looks like new a -arms might be on the cards anyway, went for a scoot yesterday, had a huge stack and bent the handlebars, steering stem + a-arms.

Gave myself concussion and broken bones(ouch).

My main aim with flipping the wheels was for stability and after yesterday I guess I need it.

Anyway thanks again for all the feedback.
