ive got a 416 ex and it has all the goodies... its got the bore kit, stage 2 hotcams, k&n, rev box, and White bros E2 slip on. i want morepower to stay ahead of the 450's that are getting bigger and badder. should i go with the 440 kit and some nacs racing headwork? im pretty sure that im going to have to get the full system sooner or later but what are some big power adders that could really keep me ahead?

440 kit with a Falicon Stroker crank, boost up to 460cc. Then get some decent head work, followed by Curtis Sparks X-6 exhaust system. Get oversized Kibblwhite valves, a decent clutch kit, hi-comp piston, the list goes on an on. For the money, sell the EX and get a 450. With all those mods on a 400EX. you are risking reliability. 450 are just a hair behind the 460cc with all that work, but much much more dependable.

I've been debating the same thing now for over 6 months. I've rebuilt my 416 into a 426 and have 0 time on the engine. I absolutely love my Honda 426 but I'm getting into dangerous terrintory with the reliability and lack of liquid cooling. The thing gets hot quickly and really have to watch it so it doesn't overheat. It's a great sand quad but the sand does get it pretty hot. Also, I only ride sand and there are some spots that my 416 cannot get my fat *** up. Plain and simple...."soft sand eats alot of horsepower" I'm tired of getting spanked by Raptors and banshees shooting up hills.

There is now way I would put the kind of money into a 400ex to make it run with crf's and Yzf's. The 400ex simply wasn't designed to be a 460 stroker. The engine can't handle it. Face it....the 400ex is a great quad, and started the "400cc" race quad trend.... but it's a dinosaur.

So, I bought a Houser crf450 hybrid and the 426 is up for sale. I went from 35 HP to 51....just like that. Should solve alot of problems. If that amount of HP becomes not enough, I'll look into the Athenea 490 kit.

I've got to agree with the sentiment of the previous two posters.

Sure, you can build a 45hp 400EX--but I wouldn't. My opinion is that when your typical 416/426 EX build isn't cutting it anymore then it's time to start considering another quad rather than pushing to get more out of the venerable 400EX engine.

There comes a point where you have to either accept the 400EX for what it is (or isn't) or cut your losses and move on.

just $0.02

If you're set on keeping your 400ex, contact www.powroll.com. A +4mm stroker will turn the 416 into a 440.

I went with this setup rather than buying a new machine. It runs strong and reliable.

been there bought that. I had a built 416, valves, porting, cam, piston, crank, carb, full exhaust, cdi, lightened flywheel, everything. The thing was powerful. but I sold it for a 450r motor and glad I did. The stock 450R motor isnt as powerful, but is lighter and shaved seconds off my lap times.

My friends 440 big bore is quite fast. It can beat any 450 with just a pipe and filter. He's got some work into it though, so unless you are really into the 400, save the money and get a 450 motor or the whole quad.

He's got
12:1 wiseco
Decked head=13:1
White Bros cams
Web springs
Aggressive porting, very
Larger valves
White Bro rev box
DMC allen full
Eldelbrock 39 or 40 can't remember
Some Datsun Z engine coil or something, real trick

I can beat him up Old's by about 4 bike lengths if I recall, it's tough always looking behind lol. But reliability is very much there, good work horse, never a problem, and his bottom end is awesome!
