Well, I never really been hunting before (I have the kinda mom thats against the whole gun thing). Well I finally talked her into letting me get one. Except I know nothing really about rifles, im pretty familiar with shotguns though. What would be a good rifle to start off with, but keep in mind it will probably be a while before I would be able to upgrade. I can handle myself with a gun so it doesn't have to be the smallest one possible. and im 5'9, 150lbs IF that helps. thanx neil

If you just starting out I would recoment a 30-30. I started out with one and loved it. It was a lever action and a good reliable and accurate caliber. I now have a 30-6 and love it! Great power. I dropped a big 8 pointer 2 years ago from about 40 yards its awsome either way good luck!

Under 300 yard shots, a >243 7mm-08 30-06 270 all will do the job nicely!

Checkout the Tikka T3 rifles available in all of the calibers suggested above. Incredible rifle at a very affordable price.

Any one of those would be a great choice. If you want to clean a lot look at the blued barreled rifles if you just want to wipe down get a stainless. I recommend a Remington 700 actioned rifle you can't go wrong.

another vote for the Remington 700.

personally i choose the .308WIN. but have used .270WIN, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300WINMAG, and 30-06 for deer hunting.

also look at the Winchester 70, and Tikka T3. both rifles come in an assortment of calibers.

i hunt w a .338 but i hunt elk ..:D

i use a winchester model 70 sporter 3 with a 26 inch barrel

its a big game gun...like i said i have shot elk with it and even a few white tail bucks...but i dont recommend it

get a 270 or a 30-06 and smoke some deer ***

30-06 bro. Its the worlds most popular hunting caliber in the world for a reason. You can reliable kill any animal short of the big 4 (Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Rhino) with it, and you could even take those, however law in most countries mandates a min of a .375.....

My buddys dad hunts with a 308, wich is ballisticly identical to the 06 in most respects, and has killed everything in NA with one. It'll serve you just fine for deer.

I'd get a Remington 700 or Ruger Mod 77 MKII I have owned both, and was served well by both.

Personaly I own a custom remington 700, in 300 WSM, and a custom enfield in 375 ICL. Good enough combo for any game on the face of the earth.

You're talking about an area where deer are rarely above 180 Lbs on the hoof. A Michigan, Ohio, or Pennsylvainia deer has a much larger body just to deal with winter weather.

I would suggest a .223 or .22 Hornet

Hunter Safety class for starters..theres enough trigger happy hunters in the woods already..

my 308 is a pump...but i started on 30-30 that was bolt action...

i can work the bolt faster and have more accuracy than the pump...the 30-30 just don't quite have the range of the .308 though

Great to here you are starting a safety class. All of my children have been through hunter and personal protection classes. I have hunted bambi with a 30-06 bolt action and the sucker is heavy and unless I have it resting on something I am 12 inches off the spot. So I use a 32 lever action with a scope. Makes me feel like a cowboy and I can hit the spot.. lol
good luck.:p

another vote for the Remington 700. or 710 if money is tight.

30-06 Sprg or 270 Win

but 243 Win, 7mm Rem, 300 Win Mag, 308 Win, will work

Call your local sheriff's office and tell them you lost it. They should be able to get you a replacement. If not you have to take the course again. Also if you have last years hunting license then the safety course id number is printed on it. Thats all you'll need for a new license.

Since this sounds like your first time hunting something you may want to consider is borrowing a rifle from a hunting partner before laying out several hundred dollars on a hobby you may find you don't like as much as you had thought.

i havent hunted in years but when i did, i have a 45-70 with 420gr bullet. good for less than 100 yds. a common rifle is the 30-06 7mm or 30-30. at the rifle range you should hear the sound of a 45-70 bullet hittin the burm. very cool

The best bang for the buck is get a Remington model 710. The price is the same across the board on different calibers and it comes set up with scope and is ready to shoot out of the box for like $330. I have one in a 30-06 and it works flawlessly. I now hunt with a Browning A-Bolt stainless stalker with the BOSS system and a Leupold VX-II 4 x 12 x 50. I still use the 30-06 in places under 100 yds. and with the Winchester GXP 2 ballistic silvertips you will destroy anything you shoot.

Well I like hunting, when I go to my dads he has some guns, but no deer rifles. Just like litle .22's to mess around with. He has lots of shotguns though, and I like shootin them. I can't think of any other small game to hunt around here besides squirrel. And b/w the Remington 700 and 710, is the 700 stronger? better quality? or what

crazedape
10-23-2006, 07:09 PM
The 700 is a nicer gun. I just bought an older one this weekend in a .243. But for a newbie the 710 will be better because you are going to end up beating the crap out of the first gun you own because it happens. Learning to control the gun while walking in the brush, climbing deer stands and riding four wheelers, it just happens trust me. It is your call though. I know lots of people with a 710 and for the price you can't beat it. A gun and a scope boresighted it just doesn't get any better for the price and the type of gun. If you do get the gun have the barrel painted by a gunsmith because it tends to rust just slightly because of the dew and possibly rain. It costs like 120. It happens to all blued barrels if not meticulously maintained.
