well I recently got my bros old 05 400ex. i like it, but its not what i wanted, literally. I wanted a z400 before my brother got bored of the 400ex and i decided to take it because it was a greatest deal on a 400 any 15 year old kid could get. Well i honestly have to say, i just dont like my quad much anymore power wise. and i've been thinking... here it goes.

well i get 500 dollars for x-mas every year. and i was thinking up until this spring i should sell the 400 and get 4000-3800 out of it and prolly have sold the 250ex by the end of this winter and have a 1,800 from that. and save up money for the next year or so.. and make like possibly 1000 dollars. and then go buy a 450ER. what do you think? I honsetly would have been happier with a z400. but now that i have the 400ex which is newer theres no point in trading, buying used, or new when i can just a 450r.

anyone??? also would it be cheaper or better to build a hybrid? also whats the best motor to put into the frame? I heard CRF450f motors are kinda difficult..

Well. you have a couple options. 1- do what u said and spend all ur hard earned money on a new R. OR, just mod out your 400ex. Those things have been around a while and people know how to get power out of them. Almost every ATV product sales company produces 400ex parts. Unless you are a serious racer hitting the MX track frequently, you dont need the power of the 450. There are tons of mods out there for the 400ex. From big bore kits to national kits. Get your 500 from christmas, sell the 250, and youll have plenty of money to make a pretty quick 400ex that would chew up z400's anyday. Just my .02. Good luck!

I'd sell the 250ex and the motor out of the 400 and build a hybrid. I bought an '06 450er and love it but in your case, either build up the 400ex or make it a hybrid.

the hybrid idea would have been good a few years ago, but with the new 450s, the hybrid is a waste of time and money. Sell both and buy a used 450r, you can get 04-05s at really go prices. I have an 04 and love it, im not going to trade up anytime soon, I do plan on buying a differnt beast, a crf450r

I think selling the two you have is a good idea. However, I don't think you will get anywhere close to 4,000 for the 400ex. They are going for more like 2500 and less.

yeah, I think you might have a hard time getting the amount you are looking for out of both quads. You might have to be a happy 15 year old with a 400ex. Get the 500 bucks (G-damn I'll trade u my christmas clothes) and put it into the 400ex. That will buy you a new cam and piston easy. That makes a huge difference.

BTW, did you get the 250 and 400ex for free? If they are handmedowns and you sell them, damn I'd be pissed if I was your older brother. lol

i have an 04 450R and absolutley love it and just like Martin Blair said i dont plan on trading it anytime soon. although i do like the new raptor 700s. but i also have a cousin with a 400ex which is in the process of keeping up with my R. i would stick to the 400EX because of all of the aftermarket you can do to them. plus, what would your brother say if you traded off his old bike that he aparently gave you a great deal. thats kinda going behind your brother trading it in isnt it? the 400EX is a very respectable bike. i would stick with it. but thats just me.

i would sell everything and get a 450r cause my friend got his brand new 05 for $4500 and its not a bad 4 wheeler plus you could proly get like an 06 or 07 for a decent price

Good suspension and a 416 kit really wake up the 400ex. Adding a cam as well that is.

But suspension isn't cheap so most of what you get for the 250ex will cover that and the 500$ you get for xmas should be a great start to getting the parts and getting them installed.

Now that being said you could sell both quads and buy a used 450r. IF you do that route make sure its got suspension done. THe 450rs really need to be widened alot for mx, and lowered. As for woods riding I am out at 50 inches so its tad tight in some woods.

If your 05 is in decent shape you should be able to get around 3000 out of it if you wait for the right buyer and advertise properly. Im not really sure what you can get out of the 250ex. I would think the 3 grand and maybe another grand at least for the 250 would give you 4 grand total and anyone who cant find a decently modded 04/05 450r isn't looking very hard. If you have been on a 450r and like them, you will NEVER be happy with a modded 400ex, they just dont compare. You would also have 500 for christmas, so if you had the 450 you could replace some things that maybe wore out or even a top end rebuild. Alot of people suggest modding the 400 but if you are going to do any racing in the future, I'd suggest against it, as you will regret not getting a 450. Get your parents involved with the purchase of a 450 and it will be easier as they will know better about

Thats all just my opinion, take it or leave it.

That being said, at your age, I would have been one happy kid with a 400ex and if the bike was free you may want to reconsider selling it without asking the person who gave it to you just so no ones feelings get hurt.
