View Full Version : How to make a 400 ex as powerful as a z400??

I have a Raptor 660 (as you can see in my sig. My brother just got his first quad (a 2004 400ex.)

Only problem is, ALL of our buddies have Z400s. Although we are not trying to have the fastest drag quad in the world, it does tend to come up riding with these guys. I guess I want him to enjoy some of the Z dominance that I presently enjoy. (bragging rights- you know how that is....)
So what can one do to make it competitive racing a Z? I was thinking a 416 kit with a webcam and maybe a full system Yoshimura exhaust.
Any suggestions?

slip on exhaust and a uni or K&N filter will wake it up.

A "webcam" will help a lot.....about 100hp

lol i think you guys need to take the 0's off those numbers. With a 416 and cam along with a filter and full exhaust the z's shouldn't see anything but the 400's dust.

If you want that 400EX to run, it can be made into a very competitive bike! For a full setup, I would recommend a 416 bore, compression and piston of your choice, Webcam, port and polished head by someone of your choice, Sparks exhaust, K&N airfilter, rev box of your choice (Research as to which would be the "Best buy" for you), and put a 450r carb on it. Don't forget to do the obvious things like taking the air lid off. If you do that to the EX, even your Raptor will be following it to the finish line!

a stock 400 should be competitive w/ a z400. Learn how to ride first before u start messing w/ the 400

It shouldnt be too hard to do. I have the JE 87mm piston (416 cc) Stage II Hot Cam, K&N filter, HMF full exhaust and proper jetting. I weigh about 275 and have absolutely smoked Z400 quads with no worries. On top of that I put a buddy of mine on my quad whou weighs about 160 and on 3 different ocassions he mopped the floor with 2 bone stock LTR 450s and one with a full Yoshi ehxaust and filter.

The most embarrasing thing about it all is that my 400 was leaking compression fron the head gasket and was smoking horribly. I thought it was broken rings but tore it down this weekend and the rings were good so now the head is in the shop getting worked.

i have a stock bore 11:1 wiseco piston, stage 1 hotcam, flywheel key, full big gun quiet race exhaust, k&n, and its jetted to a T and I pull through stock and modded z's and kfx's.... it sounds like a lot of parts, but its not really that much... i'd recommend the full exhaust and filter to start, then get the piston and cam, you'll be good to go from there

you should be able to keep up no problem with a stock z with just a slip on and a good filter. if they have a pipe you migh tneed a little more, but a z is not that much faster than a 400 stock.

You could get a K&N air filter, remove your air box lid, jet it and it would be faster than a stock Z400.

dg/cobra pipes are not much on performance, just loud
2 guys I ride with.
one has z400 w/porting and thin head gasket, exhaust

the other has 400ex, slip on, and 12:1 piston

the 400 pulls him every time but not by alot (2 lengths)

with just an exhaust a ex will be as, if not more, powerful than the z. with a cam, pipe, piston...the ex will beat a stock one without thinking twice, and beat slightly modded ones.

when all i had was no lid, jets,k&n, and a full fmf system i was faster than stock z400s and now with my mods i roast my friends z400 thats got a yoshi full system, jets, and k&n. im even beating my dads raptor and the new 450s. EX's still have alot of potential and if ridden right can be competitive with anything.

On the track it really is the rider, but when it comes to a drag race the Z is considerably faster, they have more top end than the EX. So the whole pipe and filter answer is kinda getting close but still alot slower in the top end.

the 416 with a cam may get you even with the Z. I havent really got to race a Z with my set up, but i know my buddys set up with the 440 std compression, with a 472 webcam, full pipe, was not able to keep up with a full pipe and filter on a Z. the rider size may have had a little to do with that race though. EX rider was an easy 230 and the Z rider was mayby 150.

If you looking to blow them away, do the motorwork. If you want about the same speed(saying the riders are the same), A full HMF pipe, K&N pipe, and some new jets.

all in all we as 400ex riders are alwyas going to be playing the catch up game. Really how many people leave there bike stock.

The old design of the 400ex is now just to keep a good dependable bike on the production line to make sales.

Why cant everyone just ride together and have fun, and not worry about beating each other???

Haha ya right. I've got an almost stock 400ex, its got pro circuit exhaust and K&N, thats the only engine mods it has and it keeps up just fine with Z400s, theyre close enough that I think its mostly rider experience that determines whats faster. Keep it mostly stock, its more reliable like that anyway. Just my $.02

You can beat a z400 easy. All I ride with is 450's and Raptor 700's. I can keep up with them if not beat them you just have to work a little harder. On roads though they are just way faster and you will have to spend a lot of money to compete and i don't think it is even worth it anyway if I wanted something that could run fast down the road I would get a street bike.

Ive got a 440 kit in mine and it will take care of any stock 4stroke made right now! its got a 12.5 comp wiseco, ported head, stage2 hotcam, hmf stainless exhaust and whitebros rev kit. I also have and edelbrock carb tuned for my kit. I can handle all the piped and jetted 450s no prob. The only thing i dont like about it is that it will wheely all the way through 4th if ur not carful!
