After trying REPEATEDLY last weekend to do the 70 foot uphill at BPG on his 300ex, he has decided that the 400ex would suit him better.

Tear down and rebuild will begin next week:p

I am glad in alot of ways, especially since he wont be breaking the 300ex in half :p

Not much really, just some things to help it ride good. We are going to use the 450R shocks that we had Colby do up and take a wait and see approach on the rear shock.

then when he needs more power throw the R motor in there.

10-20-2006, 01:50 PM
or just buy a 250r....Rs handle better then 400ex's and just add more motor mods as he needs them

Pappy,

I would bypass the 400ex in favor of the 450r if I were you. I rode the 400ex and I think Cody is more likely to get hurt trying to clear the jumps on it versus the 450r. The deal is you really have to wind the 400ex out all the way to the face of the jump in many places where the 450r has the power to let you relax more as you come up to the face of the jump since you already have more than enough speed built up.

My two cents...

We will be up over Thanksgiving weekend. Can't wait to see everyone again.

I know money isn't an issue since you have more toys than Toys R' Us.

when i opened this i thought he was done with quads and was going to race the 85 haha.

Pappy
10-20-2006, 02:04 PM
The 400 is more then enough, he only weighs 120 pounds with all his gear on:p On the 300 he has to hit almost every jump WFO in 4th and 5th gear. This sends his nose way high but if he doesnt, it wont clear much over 40 feet. The 400 has a good broad power range, and will easily clear every jump BPG has to offer if he decided he wants to hit them. The 450R is to much for a 13 year old:p

Pappy
10-20-2006, 02:07 PM
He has done some time on the 400:D

10-20-2006, 02:08 PM
and like we talked the other day...the 400 is SOOO much cheaper to mod now that the 450 came out.

the 400 should be good for a while. still alot of guys rockin the 400s 416's and 440s

The 400 is a much better quad for teaching a young rider(not downing the R, its one of the best ever designed)

Cool, sounds like it is going to be nice. Wait a couple years when I have a 400 and I can come over and race him, I'm the same age as him;) The only problem is you are about 22 hours away from me and he would whup me:p

Definitely modded, a 400 will pull hard...I can't remember 120 lbs. lol. I am down to 195 though from 215 when everyone last saw me! :D

I will agree that the 400ex is getting cheaper and cheaper...but Pappy has never been shy about spending a buck!

400's are no lemons. I ride a 450 and i ride it hard. Ive met up with multiple 416's 426's in my series and they will go. I think hell be great on it.

whats going to happen to the 300:( ?

part out?

Pappy
10-21-2006, 05:58 AM
Probably keep the 300 and let Ryan start on it soon.

Yeah, he pounded the lil 300:p With my new work schedule, and the wife's, we cant race so having fun is the name of the game as we prefer it.

The 400 will retain the red fenders and were thinking all black parts

Thats good....I just see so many kids around here getting lost in the moment and letting there grades suffer. Good thing he has a good dad who keeps him in check. I just know a few kids who could not handle all the cool stuff Cody gets! I am kinda Jelous as well;) Keep us updated on the rebuild:)

Pappy
10-22-2006, 12:56 PM
We also wanted to test how the 450R shocks were going to work on the 400. They are a wee bit stiff but they should be about right on the +2 arms

Pappy
10-22-2006, 12:57 PM
Codys mechanic tweaked the shocks

We had some larger jumps, but we get alot of friends over with thier kids and dont want anything they or Ryan (my youngest son) would get hurt on.

All we use our track for is checking out quads and goofing around on in between riding at the track

Yep, KH426 keeps us rollin!

I guess it would be dangerous having big jumps around little kids.

At my place i keep making bigger and bigger jumps. The locals feel they need to hit everything even though they dont have enough experience. I told the one kid which jumps to hit and not hit. Sure enough 5 minutes later i hear a rev limiter..

He went 70' on a 50' jump about 8' in the air. Left a frame mark and almost rode his 4 day old LTR straight into the creek. :ermm: I hate riding with scary ppl.

Kenny,

I don't see where anyone suggested it, but why don't you do some motor work to the 300? a 76mm piston, cam, carb and a pipe on that thing and it'll out pull a 400ex.

300extreme#8
10-24-2006, 10:27 AM
yea he could have done work to the 300 to get it close to the 400ex, but theres alot that is a big diff, plus once cody gets used to the 400 he can do work to it and make a 300 look like a 90, so i understand the reason for getting the 400 yep :)

i think hed rather have the 400ex chassis and non-built reliable motor.

Good to see the switch. :)

Riding the 300ex for years.. and spending some time on 400ex's. I have found the 400ex to be a MUCH MUCH easier quad to ride.

Honestly, I always reccomend the 400ex over the 300ex for beginners, as it's more forgiving, more stable, and a lot less stamina draining to ride.

I think those tracks and trails won't be as demanding with the 400ex under him. :D

believe it or not, I prefer to ride (in this case have cody ride) and not wrench. I see it every weekend at the track, and on the internet every night......to many folks wanting more power when they are not riding what they have to the fullest potential.

When the 400 doesnt have what is needed to do what CJ wants, then he will step to a 450...and beyond

Pappy
10-25-2006, 09:10 PM
+2 for now, being he is still on the short side I figure going to wide may possibly cause him issues

i have colby sending me an HMF slip on out to try, but in stock form the 400 is fast enough to get him moving quick fast and in a hurry
