So it has been confirmed that KTM is currently in the late phases of testing two production sport atvs! This is huge news, espically since i heard no mention of polaris in the deal. I think they would be best off designing their own chassis anyways...I read the 520 will be a race ready XC quad and the 450 a race ready GNC quad. Not to sure about the 520 but the 450 is aimed to be more race ready then the LTR :D Please feel free to post any additional information on these machines!!

The new 450 is a completly different motor. It puts out 59Hp in the dirt bike. If they don't detune it it should be around 53-56Hp in the quad? It is gonna haul if the have developed a good chasis. The shocks are supposed to be competative at the Pro-Am level. I bet that you could have them rebuilt to your specs, and be just as good as aftermarket shocks. Only time will tell. Hope to see their release soon.

Umm the link is from a competing site so i will not post it...there is not really a need anyway. It was very vauge, thats why i posted this topic to try and gather some more info. Basically what i read focused on the 450 machine and its claimed to be more powerful, better suspened than any other production quad that is race ready with only a few mods, and has some very unique features that were not mentioned...thats bascially what it said. This site seems to be on top of things with the KFX 450 info so im sure they will have something to tell us soon...something key to note however is that they said they are taking the same approach to these quads that they do with their dirtbikes. So this is VERY good news, meaning very little should need modded and it will doubtfully be detuned!!!

Anyone know if polaris is still planning on building the chassis? I hope not, that would ruin a perfectly decent machine, i can see it now....them throwing the ktm 450 motor in an outlaw chassis LOL. That would be a disaster....

as far as the article that atv scene put on there website
it didnt say anything about polaris being involved in the ktm quads.
so i guess its gonna be an all ktm machine

this is what ive been waiting for all my life (ktm/ bad arse, rippin' mother f----r)!!!!!!!!!! yeah, i hope polaris doesnt touch this thing and make it generic! nothing against you polaris owners; just my opinion. i bet these will blow the doors off all the other sport quads.

Different but aggressive looking, but alas, the production units rarely look as good as the artist renderings.

i talked to my local ktm dealer, and he said the owner seen a video of a prototype at the dealershow. the sales guy that i was trying to get the scoop on the 450, said, polaris doesnt have anything to do with the ktm450 ,(and i would imagine the 520 if they really come out with a 520). he said it would be a 2008 model, and we probably wouldnt see/hear much of it,if any-until, i believe he said aug.2007. i still think a 250r based frame with the new ktm450 sxf motor w/. or w/out fuel injection, with say 55 reliable HP, with alot of billet aluminum , ti-tanium,and st.steel parts where they could, rpm extended axle with spacers, protapers/renthal h.bars, put the battery down low in front of the motor,(below where oil tank is on a 400ex),etc.,would be the sXit for along time. knowing how ktm is, they will come out with something very unique. i can't wait!!!!!!!!

They have enough machines out to know what handles the best for mx, so the frame should be spot on. Hopefully they take a que from the KFX 450 and us an aluminum chassis. Like mentioned above the motor would not have to be fuel injected, but that seems to be the trend, it will haul *** either way! I am just hoping to see them (or anyone for that matter) come out with some long travel a-arms stock. It is confrimed though that two quads are in the works and with the supporting info from this thread looks like polaris will not be involved, SWEET.

For suspension they will use wp because ktm owns the wp company. that is my thought.

I saw that too, looks like someone photoshopped a LTR 450 to make it look like what a KTM might look like.

i read in the newer atvsport, that they are coming out with a 525 first in about 8-10 months as a late 2007 model. the 450 will be out in 2008. the 510cc motor they use ive heard that they are the best motors for power and torque, but i'm wondering if they will build a slightly different motor or an all new '525' motor?i ride the back roads and trails nowadays, no more mx for me; even though i have a ltr. i'm very anxious to see what the austrians come up with!

It will be interesting to see if they will use the old single overhead cam engines from the 03-06 bikes or if they will use the newer engines designed and put on the 07 production mx bikes. The new engines are 450 and 505. The old engines are 450 and 510(called a 525). From a business standpoint using the old engines make sence. The more they can get out of the molds and casts the more profitable they are. Plus the old engines were still powerfull and reliable. I guess we will just have to see what route KTM decides to take. I would think though they will have the mx quad out first. With Polaris using the 525 engine in the new outlaw 525, I think KTM will produce a mx quad first so it doesn't directly compete with another quad with their engine it it. It also gives quad people some time to check out the KTM engines in the Outlaw and check reliability. This is purely speculation and only KTM knows what it is really going to do.

So I was bored and decided to marry a KFX 450 and a KTM SFX 450 to see if I could come up with somthing cool....Now this is an MS Paint picture since I didn't have access to Photoshop so I know there are some rough edges, but I like it...

Pic looks great. I don't think KTM will be using an aluminum frame though. They are the last holdout on bikes to use aluminum. But I could be wrong. I just want to see some real pics of it!

personally i never owned an aluminumed frame quad/bike,,but , i talked to a guy out at the pro races in illinoise about 5 years ago, (he had a cannondale)and he said he had problems with keeping the bolts tight in the frame. i imagine he put lock-tite on the bolts also. i would imagine they wouldnt flex as much and be lighter, but i think they should stay with chromoly steel frames for the ktm. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT!!!!!!!!!THEM(450&525cc?)

ThePhantomRider

I agree, I think that KTM will go with a steel frame, I just had a black KFX picture to mangle, so that's what I used.

As for bolts loosening, I believe that Kawasaki has dealt with those issues since they used cannondale frames to figure out what worked and what didn't.

Time will tell.

I don't think the bolts staying tight will be an issue if they go with aluminum. I rode honda bikes since 98 when they started the whole aluminum frame trend. I never once had a problem with bolts comming loose. I did have some issues sometimes with the bolts not coming out! The steel would react with the the aluminuim and it was tought to get them out. There is something to do with the way the steel corrodes and how the aluminum does. It is a misconception that aluminum is way better than steel. They both have there good and bad qualities. Aluminum is actually cheaper to manufacture and retool than what steel is. You can actually make a steel frame that is just as light and way stronger than aluminum but the type of steel needed is fairly expensive. KTM has been able to keep the weight down by using the no link rear suspension system. This allows their frames to weigh more, but the overall weight of the bike is very close to that of its aluminum framed competitors.

cbr
11-14-2006, 07:17 PM
i also think it would be bad if they went with a dirtbike rear linkage set up-stock. like i said about not ever owning an aluminum framed bike, i'd think the factories could put heli-coils in so you could torque bolts in with out worrying about stripping them out; which i always seem to like to give the wrench an extra push. woops!

cannondales had steel threaded inserts, and the 2 cdales i had never had a problem with that. however i like the simple easy to access design of my yfz450 the best.
