I've been out of quads for a few months now and came to realize that I need one,so in a couple of weeks I will be picking a 04 up for 3900 give or take a couple hundred,I really haven't followed the 450R as much as I did when I had my old YFZ,so I'm just looking for the main parts needed to make it a decent machine.

Im talking about the sprocket and stuff, any other nessarcy mods?

Any problems with the 04's?And anything I should keep a eye on,thanks everyone,I'm hoping to make a full comeback here in a couple of weeks.

This past saturday I picked up a used '04 for $3600 that was in perfect condition. The guy told me the first thing I should do is gear it down one tooth in the front, which then would be a 13 tooth...I think  . I may pick one up, my first mod is gonna be a sparks pipe/filter/jet kit, then i'll see if that gives me the feeling i'm looking for. He said to gear it down mostly if you do alot of trail/rec riding, cause first gear is really tall.

But if you get a 450, you will be so F*ing happy with it, they're soo fun!

Mine:

I took the graphics off and shaved the fenders.

Looks good but you should get the nerfs powder coated to match the bumper.

Looks nice. First word of advice is watch your oil very close everytime you change it.(do it every couple rides) If you EVER see any metal shavings at all even a lil bit do not continue to ride it! Thall mean its time to buy a new crank/rod setup and rebuild it. I caught it early on mine before the engine locked up. It happens to some 04/05's(great info on trx450r.org about this) Other than that itll be a blast. I love riding mine and i cant wait to get the parts to put the engine back together and go RIDE!

Change your oil religiously as well as keeping your air filter and airbox spotless and well oiled. Take that swingarm bolt out before you ride it and cover it with anti-seize or waterproof grease. You should probaly grease up the swingarm bearings, linkage and shock bushings while you are at it too. Also it probaly wouldn't hurt to take the front end apart and grease everything down good. Also it is CRUCIAL to put locktite on all of your bolts! This may sound like to much but a well maintained and lubricated quad will last a LOT longer than one you neglect.

I also race XC in Missouri so it's really rocky, but still I don't think the black should've chipped that bad
