oem or hotrod crank

going to rebuild my motor and wanting to know from experience on the hot rod verses oem on a long rod crank. wanting to rebuild a good reliable motor but dont want to spend almost twice the price on a oem crank.

get a oem crank, if you order it from service honda its $290.

go with a oem crank cause if you want it to last a long time then you want a heavier more put to gether crank not a light weight one it only weakens it unless you want less weight go with oem

I have installed both in different 250R motors over the years...

Niether one failed on me...

I will say that the OEM crank fit better when assembling the cases.

I always felt more confident installing an OEM crank as well...

ya ive had my days with the r i had a 1988 250r for 6 yrs and finally sold it for a 450r dont know if i made the right choice yet i loved the r

Every quad seems to have weak points and strong points. For example, the 400EX engine is extremely reliable, but when you install a big-bore and increased compression, the head studs become a weak spot.

For most Honda engines, and definitely the 250r engine, the crank is definitely a strong point. That doesn't mean the hotrod cranks are junk, but I know many engine builders that swear by the OEM crank. I don't know of any that "swear" by the hotrod crank.

If professional engine builders prefer the OEM crank, I have to believe there is a reason.

my personal opinion is that the hot rods is a crap shoot. i hear more bad's than good's about them. alternattively i'd suggest a pro-X crank setup. i've ran one for years with no problems but, for a strong peice of mind i say go with a OEM.

I vote OEM too. I had a hot rod break on me and no problems using OEM cranks. I've built several motors with a new OEM crank and they havn't had any problems. Cheap insurance considering how much damage, time and money it will cost you if the hot rod crank does go bad.

well in my 10-12 years of having my R I have gone through 2 OEM cranks, so the last time I bought a Hot Rod crank for $185 off Ebay. Didnt have any problems putting the cases back together, crank fit like it was supposed to

well if you have an 86 then your out of luck i just tried too order an OEM crank assy. from service honda but they have been discontinued.....:( i had too go with the hot rod crank i'll seee how long it lasts...

If you want an OEM quality 86 short rod, Nicks Pro X has them. You need a pro to install it on you old crank. I have 10 + years on R's, OEM Honda crank for sure. I had one IMS Hot Rod rebuild crank from LRD and it died after 3 hrs use.

when i grenaded my bottom end a couple months ago, i called all the main players (ESR, Duncan, CT, LRD) and asked them which crank assembly they reccomended for their big bore kits, and they all said OEM.... consequently OEM must be by far the best, cuz you know the shops always try to sell you on BS if htey can get away with it...

in that case the pro-X is the next best thing. as long as a reputable builder does the work, then it should be as good if not better if the pin were welded(something i'd have done on a larger bore cylinder).

I'm in the same spot that you are. I blew the rod berrings in my motor a couple months ago. After asking around I was told consistantly, to keep an OEM crank/rod assembly in the motor. So in another couple months when my motor goes back together, you can gues what crank and rod will be going into my R. And when you buy it get an 88 crank, and 88 crank berrings. I forget exactly what the difference was, but I know it was something to do with the berrings. So go with 88 parts.

Can anyone give me the information/website for sending an OEM crank to Pro-X? My friends grenaded motor, is needing a crank and sounds like there is mixed feelings about the hotrod crank.

save yourself a chunk of change and get your hot rod trued and welded and you won't have problem.s. Out of the box they are wobbly as hell.

Crankworks rebuilt my shortrod crank with a pro-x rod, total with shipping back and forth was around $175.
