I dont like how short first gear is on my 05 400ex, id like to have 1st gear a little taller and more usable to me because i find myself never using it at slow speeds because second gear can be used

would a 15 tooth front sprocket help in this area?

yes, a 15 will increase your final drive ratio, so you would be able to hold first gear a little longer. but it will also raise all your other gear ratio's as well, so it will feel like teh bike has lost some power. a stock bike may struggle in teh higher gears with a larger front sprocket.
