I read on another forum site that after you install the hrc kit, you need to install a new piston and rings. There is no way that is required.. unless im missing something! Is this true?
THANKS!

Its just Honda covering their rear end. That piston will last many many hours.

I believe several members on another forum are still running strong on 300+ hours! I'm sure this is a case by case situation tho. Maintain it right, and it'll treat you right!

I cant even imagine how many hours I have on my piston. Its still got the stock piston in it since the day i bought it .... back in Aug. of 2004! I mean.. i've rode this thing almost every day since then and it still.. still runs strong. Im getting ready to put in a JE 13:1 though.

yeah man.. just clean the filter, change the oil and grease the chain about every other hard ride or so .. and it'll last you forever!

Remember, this is on an 04/05 machine...which utilize a 10.5:1 piston with a longer skirt within a 94mm bore.

The 06/07 machines use a 12:1 piston with a shorter skirt within a 96mm bore.

Just FYI.

Don't treat the thing like your lawn mower for god sake. Just put in a new piston and rings every year if you are a casual rider and more often if you are a serious racer. Many people wouldn't think twice about putting on a $100 graphics kit, but when it comes to a $100 piston and rings, no way???????? Yes, the '06-07' HRC kit recommends a 15 RACING hour piston change.

HAHAHAHAHAHA dammm aint that the true...

I wouldnt worry too much about the piston if your a rec rider... If your into draging and hill shooting hell you will replace the piston anyways for a HC... but if you maintain your bike your piston will last a long time...

450RRR from the org had mannnnny hours on his stocker 06er and that was with lots lof juice use...

I tore my '06 down after about 35 race hours (XC racing) and the piston still looks, and measures nearly new.

I have 500+ hours on my 450r. After tearing down the engine to fix my blown up rod bearings i can tell you the stock piston and cylinder are absolutely beatiful looking. If you take care of it your engine will last. sucks about this design flaw with 04/05 450r's. Oh well once its rebuilt it will be better than brand new.

i also would say at least throw some rings on a piston once a year to keep a okay seal. if not just waste a $100 bucks a year get new gaskets all threw the head and a piston and rings.

c'mon some people spend like $100 on a front bumper, but not on the engine.

Just remember that it is a race motor not a generator motor.. If you do not do your upkeep it will fail you. Every 10 hrs ??? Kinda extreme ..... You do not want to be going over a 60 or 80 foot double and have something quit you !!! My friend put a 02 crf cam , JE piston and ported head on his bike.. He pulls like 50 horse and this is yr 2 and his motor finally died.. It did not fail during a ride but it started showing signs of being done.. Took it apart and the crank bearings were shot.. And remember if moding up your motor make SURE to check them valves....

Piston should last a year if you rec ride..

After 500+ hours I don't think you can call it a design flaw.
