i like them real fast

real fast, BUT too narrow, short and alot of bump steer. Also reilablily wasn't good either. A stock 250r would beat them stock and still beat them if the tecate had motor work, wider a-arms and axle. That say enough???

I heard the Tecate was the fastest and most powerfull of the 3 250's.

yeah the tecate was fastest

the tecate was even faster than a stock banshee, but they handles like crap. and there is no way a trx250r was gonna hang with a tecate in a drag race

underpowered

yupp. in a test between teh LT, tecate, and the TRX they said the tecate was teh fastest. they said the perfect quad had teh ergo's of the LT, motor from the Tecate, and the handling of the TRX. the tecate is definitally a great bike, but rare. i would love to own one, just to be different.

10-16-2006, 09:40 AM
i've owned a bunch of them, and they were neat bikes, but very tempermental, and constantly something going wrong with them...definitely quicker then either the r's or the LT's...i know because i've owned them all....

'87 I found on the net.

Straight power is awesome but that's about it. Handling was below par and it has some serious reliability issues.

More Tecate pics here (http://www.pegusisfreeware.com/paulsmetalgear/AtvLand/Tecate.htm#).

Yup, it was the fastest, 75mph I think.

A tiny bike though. Width and length.

I think they're sweet, If I saw one when I ride I'd be like, ''Sweet Bike Dude" He'd be like, "Thanks".

Knew I was right :D My buddy used to own an 88 and he said it was ridiculously quick. He said he could punch it in 4th from a roll and either light up the tires or 12 oclock it.

I think their pretty sweet, it'd be cool to work the motor into something reliable and change up the frame to something you could work with, without having to get custom stuff made up all the time. Although I have heard from a few people that the Motor was easily made reliable. They are definately sick looking.

A tecate, the name says 525 don't know if that is motor size or what...

They were powervalve from the factory right?

deathman53
10-20-2006, 08:25 AM
86/87 tecate 3 and 87/88 tecate 4 were powervalve top ends from the factory. The 86/87 tecate 3 was almost identical to the 85-? kx250 motors and the tecate 4 was almost similar but used a counterbalancer(different cases and crank). Many guys used the top ends from kx250's on tecate due to the different porting and more power, same thing went for the 84/85 tecates, they used 83/84 kx250 style top ends and motors, with a few things different, a common swap was a kx250 top end on those too.

I'm pretty sure they only made Tecate-4's in 88 and 89, not 87 deathman53. I think.

There were Tecate 3-wheelers in the mid 80's

Yeh 3's came out in like 85, but 4's didn't come till 88. I think.

I know tecate 4's were out in 87, they were out 87 and 88. They stopped them in 89, probably alot were sold in 89, but were actaully 88 models.

87 model

I'm telling you, look at microfiches, 87 and 88 had them, not 89, alot probably were around till 89 and 90, I have some magazines that show them released in 87.
I wonder if you guys knew this, Jimmy White raced them on mx and Doug Roll(of Roll design) used to race them on desert. Also there was parts for them(as the fisrt long travel a-arms and gullwing a-arms) that were designed by Doug Roll and it was his design for the gullwing stock a-arms on it. There was Jwr relpica parts available, there were pced white with blue lettering. The jwr a-arms were +2 and had two shock mounts, one was for flat track and the other was for mx. Doug Roll used to race his own design swingarm, a-arms and they used Finish line axles on them. Tecate 4 parts were the first availble for Roll design, their line included trx250r parts very quickly. There also was a kit sold by ?????(don't remember) that reduced the bump steer to almost nothing. Like I posted in the beginning, the reason why they never took off was because, they were too short and too narrow stock. A stock trx250r would beat one all day long on a mx track(one with extended a-arms, axle, 300 bigbore, etc). Also they had problems with the stators as the magnets became unglued for the flywheel and took out both and sometimes damaged the cases, it was a real expensive fix. I had a 85 tetace, it was nothing but a headache, I'm told the tecate 4's were nothing different. On the contrary, a 86/87 tecate 3 would give a 85/86 atc 250r its run for the money and was a much better mx track bike, Honda had the edge with the factory race bikes and riders, also the dnf's of the honda bikes was alot less.

they are very rare...i have never rode one but i would like to one day

Yeh I know Jimmy White raced one. I watched Huevos 3 today again and there he was sittin on his Tecate-4 in the Legends 2000 segment.

Isn't William Yokely's a Tecate too? I thought it said it on it and its green on Huevos 3 but it had the exhaust exit of a 250r.

his was a factory kawi. ride that they built. if i remember correctly it had a kx250 motor and a bunch of costom parts and i think a 250r style frame. im not 100% sure so correct me if im wrong.

It was an aftermarket frame with a KX250ish motor and towards the end of his Kawie career he replaced the KX motor with an R motor. That kinda put an end to his relationship with Kawie factory. That "new" tecate was a great idea but it never really worked out that well. Bill Ballance ran that quad for a year or 2 as well.

We been searching for a tecate 4 or tecate 3 (86 and up years) We own a tecate 3, 84 model; don't be hesistant though because this think still freaking rips hard. Put's a lot of 250r's to sleep with no problem at all

Heres a pic of my dads tecate and my 250R

We also got a tri-z but it's in pieces for now haha

why such a long swinger in that 250r? I have 2 atc250r's, atc200x, trx250r, crf450r hybrid and I'm gonna build a woods trx250r, I have 2 dirtbikes also. as you can see by my profile, my bikes are far from stock. I have some tecate 3 parts around, if you are interested.

Hate when the bike lifts when I hit it out the whole haha It's set up for drag ( still looking to build the motor or have a CR500 in the works) and hill climbs.. Yea I'll pm ya on the parts for sure..

if i remember correctly the front end that reduced the wicked bump steer was sold by dura blue.it had some short tie rods that hooked to a link that then was hooked to the long tie rod to the wheel.we used to race these on the ice and off-road ,like the crandon brush run 101 before they quit racing quads. They were fast for sure but the power valves broke non-stop it seemed.I did mx it for part of a year but I could go faster on my built 250x.So then a 250r came into the garage and that put a end to the tecate 4 blues.i would also love to have one just because they are rare

I remember reading about the vibration of the motor was numbing his hands and making it hard to ride very long. I also remember reading about how most dirtbike motors are hard to ride for long in a quad due to intense vibration.
