I've been watching a lot of riding video's and I started to compare the pros on 450's vs the days when they rode 250r's it seem's like they had more style when they rode the 2 strokes

Korey Ellis for example, His part in h4 (pismo) is absolutely amazing and Dana Creech's style is just flawless on the R's, when they are in the air it just looks amazing the way they throw them around specially during the Dana Creech & Greg Little part in H4.. and jone's part in h5 is amazing too!

But I do have to agree that they have style on the thumpers as well but it just seems like they were more entertaining to watch on the 2 strokes.. idk maybe I'm crazy? lol Not saying they are faster on the 2 strokes but it just looks like they have that flawless style going on when they rode them..

if you think about it they rode the old R's for a long long time before they started switching to the thumpers. The guys like Farr have been riding for 20 years and just in the last 4 years have they been on the 4 strokes.

I deffinatly like the style they had when they were on the 250r's better. They were doing stuff in Huevos 4 that was evem crazier than they do now.

i completly agree with mxjunkie, when the pros were on the 250r they had alot more style, like they could pull crazy whips on them and stuff

now on the 4strokes its just a straight jump (not doing any whips etc.)

most likely cuz the new 4 strokers are heavier

i kinda miss my 250r :(

I've always liked the style they rode with on the R's. They also seemed to go A LOT bigger; I mean look at almost every segment in H4. But I personally think they look a lot smoother on the 4strokes.

maybe its becuase the 250r was a bit lighter. I dont know about anyone else...but i know when im out racing I dont waste my energy trying to throw the quad around and whip it out...I can do it, but that doesnt mean I want to waste my energy

Personally, I like them on 450's more.

They may not look as smooth, just because they haven't been riding them for nearly as long, but they look every bit fast, and sometimes faster.

rebelbanshee

20 or so less pounds and a super ridgid chromoly frame will do alot for you...production based bikes just dont have the capabilities of fully custom quads. the only advantage 450s have is smooth power and lots of it.

2-strokes got the PUNCH and the SNAP, yeh, the 4-strokers got easy gradual power.

I loved the days of the 250r only, Huevos 3 is dope. The things they do with them, and how they rip in the trails and everything. They know the 250 can take it so they go rip up everything.

Yeh, my cousin bought a 450r and he keeps bragging telling everyone to lift it cuz its so light, I'm like, dude, thats like a house, go lift my 250r and tell me wut you think.

House 450r vs. light quad 250r

I can just kick the @ss end of my 250r out when I'm riding, just with body english, and I'm 155 pounds!

Back in the days with 250r's they had more guts, and went crazy, now they are just playin it safe.

I love the 250r days, and wish there wouldn't be no 450's but wutcha ganna do?

Didn't they outlaw 2-strokes for the pros? And with the 450's they got factory rides, so thats another reason.

Glad I got my 250r!

I take it you never rode a YFZ, let alone a 450. YFZs have PUCNH and SNAP, more than any 2smoke I rode.

As a matter of fact I have ridden about 4 YFZ's, and 1 or 2 450r's

Yeh, and I'm always stickin by my word, you don't even have to nail it on a 250r and the front end comes up HARD! Happened to me numerous times yesterday and I was just cruisin around my little yard in town!

When you can sit on the tank in 5th, hit the gas and take your wieght off it and the front end comes to the balancing point, I say they got way more SNAP than a 4-stroke.

I come out of turns on a YFZ and hit it wfo open on pavement, all 4 tires on the gound. When you go wfo on a 250r, the front end is up.

And back when they all had 250r's they were in it for fun, they'd hit anything that had a face on it, they went nuts, now with the 450's they are just about finishing the race and consistency. Yeh, they are still crazy but not like they were back in the day.

I still dont get what your saying about the pros "went nuts"...they still do all of the big jumps at the tracks...The only jump they dont do that bikes do is Loroccos leap.

When i turn my lt-r on pavement..and pin it out of the corner, i get nothing but wheel spin...my YFZ did the same, being that 250r's are lighter...does that give them the extra traction on pavement to wheelie? Im kind of curious

Ralph
10-16-2006, 11:49 AM
Generaly you dont want the wheels to come up. You want all for on the ground now matter how you hit is so when you come out of a corner in any situation you dont loose your ability to steer.

Another thing about 250r's. 2 years ago at rausch creek (Hbomb segment) i was talking to dunk right when he got his new yfz and if i remember correctly he liked the yfz more than his hybrid and 250r. Not positive though it was two years ago.

250r's were not gonna last much longer than they did. Parts were getting too expensive, and they were simply too old. I still think they were great and probably the best bike of all time only because it ruled the industry for more than a decade starting before i was even born.

saying that 250r's have more power than the production 450's is ridiculous. You cant use your own personal opinion to base that off of. you ever rode a yfz with a full built national motor. WOW

the one thing the 250r had more of then the yfz is punch and snap

i think that the stock vs stock comparison the 250 would have more punch and snap, but modded the 450 would. they hit so hard right off the bottom.

and u need to remember, the punch and snap u r talking about is from a 295R that is a alot powerful than a stock bore 250R

an updated 250r would put every 450 to the side of the raod with a big ol for sale sign on them.....i think basically everyone would switch back over....but for me, i never left so i would just buy a new 250r....ahhh just listen to how good that sounds... "id buy a new 250r" :D

10-16-2006, 06:54 PM
i honestly dont think alot of people would switch back over if Honda did that. Only a few guys. Why spend a buttload of money ina 250r motor to get say 50 hp when you can take a 450 throw a pipe, intake and cams and get 50+

stalefish_132
10-16-2006, 06:56 PM
i do agree that watching them ride on 250R based quads had alot more air time and whips and what not but tell me this, if your racing foryourself thats one thing but if your factroy sponsored rider on a 450 woudl you be throwign the quad around as much? i know i'd do what ever it i could to be on the podium. i bet that the guys can throw aroudn the 450's as good as the 250's if they really want to.

my .02

10-16-2006, 07:06 PM
but what alot of you guys are forgetting is that the old TRX250r motor would be totally different if they were to make the 250r again....it would basically be a CR250 motor....put a pipe and reeds and your at about 50 hp with less weight....and if they made the aluminum frame it would be a very nice quad...and then if they added fuel injection....THAT would be an updated 250r....and thats why i think everyone would switch back over....basically it would be a 250 or 265 powervalve, fuel injection aluminum frame ATV....i dont think the 450 are much faster then what the 250rs were doing in 2000 and 2001, now just imagine fuel injection and better motors....almost everyone would switch back over....if i ran honda, things would be wayyy different :D

BTW and they could make a 2 stroke 250 motor meet the 2006 emissions, just look at the snowmoblie world

rebelbanshee

they could designate it for closed course racing only (like MX bikes) and it wouldnt matter how clean it was

I guess alot of you guys didn't see the low emission ECM controlled CRM250AR (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=249920) that I posted a while back. If Honda were to produce another 2 stroke bike/quad (it wil NEVER happen) the motor would be based off of this design. I don't think many 4 strokes would be a able to compete with an ECM controlled pinger. The ECM precisely controls the RC valve (power valve), oil injection and timing with inputs from engine load, throttle position, gear selection and RPM.

There are 2 local riders with 50hp+ versions who dominate the Motard tracks here on island whenever they race. These guys run away from CRF450/DRZ400SM/KTM450 EXC-R/YZF450 with ease. Both have turned down offers to race for large teams because they do not want to change to a 4 stroke and their riding is merely a hobby. Power delivery of the ECM controlled motor is smooth but I think their history with 2-strokes since they have been riding since the 70's (both guys are in their 40's) is what helps them dominate!

I am a die-hard pinger fan but the days of Big four produced pingers in over :(. We silly pinger fans will have to rely on KTM, Gas Gas, ATK and the other companies to produce products for our enjoyment.

Oh yeah, the 50hp+ versions are 265cc with better porting, larger carb, turned pipe, retuned ECM and the typical Motard add-on (big brakes, wheel/tire package, retuned suspension, sprockets). Stock is a mild mannered 40hp.

Josh - if Honda produced a TRX250R with the aforementioned motor I would buy it in a heartbeat!

TheFontMaster
10-17-2006, 04:03 AM
I want one of those motors for my 250r now:scary:

And I think that if honda did make an updated 250r, as long as the frame was the same exact geometry that alot of people would be switching back.
