valve clearance & adjusting

i was goin to check valve clearance on my 04 yfz450 and i need answers how do u check the valve clearance i kno u take feeler guage(mm or inches?) and the motor got to be top dead center. but i dont wer to put the feeler guage and wat shuld be the specs?

Just did a top end on a customers Z400 and its got caps over the valve springs if you need to check if out of spec im sure its like the z is there are little pucks in there that say a number in there about 3/8" diameter (roughly) those are your shims, If I remember right, that particular bike was 4-8 intake and 8-12 exhaust. And that was just about the same on a big 700 Kawaski utility we did a while back.
