ive heard that the 14t front sprocket will also give you more top end speed then a 15t is this true? something to do with the fact that the 400ex motor dosent rev out high enough to pull the 15 as fast but with the 14 it can rev more an pull a higher top speed? is this true or just a bunch of bull$****. i want to get the 14t but i dont want 2 lose 2 muc top end. also with the mods i hav do you guys think its a good idea i do fast trail racing ,riding thanxs sorry 4 the long post.

nope u go up in the front sproket to get topen and then u go downin the back this is for more top end if u want bottom end go down in the front adn go up in the rear.

before i made my hybrid i was running a 16 on the front and a 38 on the rear and still had tons of low end. the bike would eat the 450's off the line.

You don't have too, actually you can't remove a link, theres no master link on a stock 400ex chain. All you have to do is tighten the chain once you get the sprocket on.

I just made the switch from a 15 tooth to a 14 because some of the trails I ride in have alot of obstacles and it sucks feathering and slipping the clutch 95% of the time when a bunch of utility quads are in front of you.

I run 20in rear tires. When I practiced holeshots with the 15 tooth, 1st gear was to short, and 2nd felt to tall. Now that I run the 14 tooth, I just use 1st for the rough trails and 2nd feels perfect for holeshotting. With the 14, I can pull the front end up alot easier in every gear if I try. I deffinately lost about 4-5mph on top end though.

Im sticking with the 14 tooth with 20s, and 15 tooth with 18s.

To tighten the chain you must loosen the four allen-head bolts at the end of the swingarm. Then take a screwdriver or punch and insert it into the notched adjuster that sits to the left of the swingarm, right next to the rear sprocket. Hit the adjuster forward to loosen the chain and back to tighten it.

As for the difference with a 14t versus stock 15t front sprocket, I noticed a substantial difference. The 14 allows the quad to pull much harder off the line and thru the gears, but it does take off top speed and causes the engine to rev out much quicker. I changed mine because I started to go to the MX track a lot where you never need 5th gear, so I didn't care about top-end. I recently switched back to my 15 though because I hate the 14 for the desert trail riding that I do. The 14 makes me feel like I am riding in 4th gear when I'm in 5th. I keep thinking that I need to upshift but I'm out of gears! I recommend the 14 if you ride tight trails or MX, but if you open it up quite a bit, you probably won't like it. I have a XC desert race coming up and I am actually thinking about going down in the rear as well to gain some more top-end since the race course is apparently pretty high speed.

Here is an illustration of what I was talking about when I explained how to adjust the chain.

The 14 tooth is great for tight woods and quick elevation changes like hopping in and out of deep creek beds you can hardly kill th e thing just when you think it is about to die you can just gas it and it takes off i found that in the woods i could just leave it in 3rd because it just wouldnt die and would take off like a rocket but when you get out in the wide open you will notice the top half of the power band virtuly unuseable imo the bike just doesn't pull through the gears right in my opinion i rode with mine for about a year and switched back because it just doesnt soot my riding style much anymore for the price it is deffinatly worth playing with
