I'm going to be selling my Predator soon, and have narrowed down my next machine to be either a Banshee or a 400ex. I have a little experience with the 400ex, and know a few people that have them, so I've been able to get some time on those and see what they can do. I don't have any experience with the Banshee, or really any 2 stroke, and would like to know how it compares to the 400ex. How reliable are they? Anything you can add would be apprecitated.
I switched to quads after the "4 stroke revolution," so my comments about 2 strokes are coming from the 2 wheel perspective.
2 strokes make awesome power when you have them in the powerband. This means that it is sometimes necessary to slip the clutch when you need power but not much ground speed (like at the top of a steep hill with an "unknown" other side). 2 strokes are also easily modified to make more power.
4 strokes don't make nearly as much power per cc as 2 strokes, but they usually have much less of the powerband effect. I own a (stock motored) 400ex. It doesn't make power like mad at high rpm, but it makes decent power everywhere else. I can ride my ex on tight, hilly, wooded trails without having to slip the clutch.
The Banshee excels at things like hill climbing and drag racing.
The ex is just a good, "all around" sport quad.
I bought mine used 2 1/2 years ago. Zero breakdowns and minimal maintenance.
Good luck with your decision!
banshee low end not much---400ex good low end----banshee mid hhhmmm i feel something----400ex mid its there not bad-----banshee top end oh my god hold on hope brakes work----400ex top end is this thing on.:D
no yfz450 ltr 450 trx450r the new kaw 450 or 700 raps these are the best power and handling quads out there.

Ok, thanks. I'm thinking I'm probably going to go with a 400ex, and am hoping to drop a 426 kit in it and all the other stuff if I can find a machine at the right price.

I have a 400 and a banshee. A all stock banshee is very reliable. I never had any problems.
Then I rebuilt it put pipes reeeds blah blah blah and it took a while to dial it in. After I got it dialed in..it was a perfect machine.
Overall I like my 400 better.
Just ride both and see what ya like

Listen, if you want high performance, go straight to a 450F. They're BUILT for it. Your beating a dead horse. Not saying the 400ex can't generate excellent power/handling, but it's just not worth it for the cost/headache.

your selling a predator for a 400ex? that seems kinda strange. a 400ex will be musch slower than a predator. banshees are NOT trail bikes they have absolutly no bottom end for the trails.

I know it seems like a down-grade, but reliability is what I'm looking for. I've had my Predator maybe 6 months and have already had to sink $1000 into it just maintenance. That's not good, so I want something I can ride, not something I need to work on all the time.

planning on it :D just have to sell the Pred...going for a 400ex
I know have to fix one of my valves cuz I'm and idiot. I rode it while they needed adjusting, but it had been a while since I'd ridden and didn't want to wait, so I rode it and bent a valve, so now that needs to be replaced...result of my own stupidity...

I got it because I was dumb and was looking at engine size over anything else...my cousin had an ex and was bragging about it, he had a 400 I had a 300, so I wanted to have something to blow him away, but that turned around to bite me in the ### real quick. I was a honda guy, and still am, but i'm stuck with my Pred for right now until I fix the valve and sell it.
