Hard Starting When Hot

Hi,
I have a 1988 250R. When it is cold it takes about 4 to 5 kicks to get it started, but after riding it for a while, then let it sit for 20-30 minutes it takes 30-40 kicks if I am lucky to get it started.
Any suggestions.

What kind of carb do you have?

What size pilot?

What is your air screw set at?

What are the condition of your reeds?

Are you getting spark after the engine gets hot?

What is the condition of your air filter?

50 pilot 180 main
1 3/4 turns a/s
G3 reeds w/10 hrs use
Am getting spark but not for sure how strong, have aftermarket ignition on it.
K&N good condition and clean.

Carb was built by 1 dir racing and they suggest 50 pilot, 190 main, 1 3/4 - 2 turns. It felt like a 190 main was to fat and I think the 180 might also be a little fat. I get black stuff running between my head and exhaust and also out the end of my exhaust.

Seems like you are running real fat if using a 190 main, my CR500 bike only uses a 180 main during mild temperatures. The slow on my CR5 is a 60 too.

Sounds like you need to seal the flange where the pipe meets the cylinder, to eliminate any exhaust leaks.;)

This will make it easier to start? There is very minimal leak at the cylinder where it meets the pipe.

No, its not gonna help the starting situation, but it will be 1 less chance of the engine sucking raw air in, and seizing the engine. ;)
Next time ya pull the pipe off, use some hi temp RTV silicone on the flange,and pipe connection.

No problem....As for the hard starting, Next time it acts up, check for spark. I have had issues with vehicles for the coil not working properly. The coil was ok when cold, but after it got warm/hot, it would break down, and not fire correctly. Let the vehicle sit until completely cold, and it would fire right up. Not guaranteed to be your problem, but worth a look. Good luck.

Also...When you shut it off to sit 20-30 mins, are you turning the fuel off? I have seen quads/bikes keep leaking fuel (flooding) and it inturn can fill the pipe with fuel, making it a pain to start. Again, may not be your problem, but yet, another possiblity.

I will check the spark next time and also turn my fuel off, didn't think of that one.

I have the same exact problem!!!! I bought a brand new oem coil, and that didnt work, i talked to LRD and the said to check for some condensation in the stator, did that , let it dry out, that didnt work,
I also have a minor exhaust leak... I have tried to fix that.. still doesnt work...

Right now my quad is sitting at Paul Turners.... He is trying to figure out what is wrong with it, so i am still waiting to hear back from him about it

I would check out your plug, and see if the jetting is off...

check your reeds, I had 2 broken reed pedals and it did the same thing.
