How many of you guys run tubes for trail riding? Will it help eliminate flats?

I had to put tubes in my 18in fast trekkers, because something put a gash through my sidewall and it also went through my rim. whatever it was.

I know alot of ppl that run Tire balls, But I do not know about tubes.
