So I clipped a tree with my left front tire and I really bent the tie rod. Hurt my hands pretty bad too. I have already ordered the replacement parts (1 and 3 in the link below), but I'm having problems getting the old one off. I removed the cotter pin and loosened the nut (item 5). The nut doesn't come off though, it just spins along with the tie rod end. Do I need a special tool. The tie rod side does not appear to be a normal nut. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Well, since your not going to reuse them you can do a few things. If the nut is some of the way up you can take a pair of plires or vicegripes and clap on to the bottom of the threads, and then spin the nut off with a wrench. OR.. Your if you have a torch you can torch the nut off. But those are the ways I have done it.

You have to put an end wrench on the top part of the tie rod end to keep it from spinning. Hold the top with a wrench and turn the bottom nut.

If you just bent your tierod you don't have to remove the end, loosen the big nuts on both ends and unsrew the rod from the ends, they heve reverse threads so it unscrews in one direction..
