My wife has a 400EX that I am sure was abused by the previous owner. A few rides ago the clutch was slipping. I pulled the plates out and checked them. They were black and perhaps glazed but were not worn anywhere close to the wear limit. She has been on 2 short rides since then with no problems but we are planning a big trip to the Hatfield McCoy trail system and I am concerned about it. Could I pull the disk out and run them over some sand paper or do I just need to replace them, or could they be fine since they have not slipped since?

I would say that if they got hot, then they will flake off in time. I don't know if scratching them up will help or not. If you got it apart, I would say replace them. That way you know what you got. :)
