I tried to access the needle on my 400ex carb and when I was removing one of the two screws on the slide, it completely stripped on me. I was able to remove the other one without a problem. There doesn't seem to be enough clearance for vise grips. Is there another way to remove this screw? Can i remove the entire slide from the carb? I'm sure someone has had this problem as the screws on this carb are famous for stripping. Thanks

Take a dremel and cut a deep straight line through it, use a flathead screw driver to get it out, replace them with stainless steel screws.

I like the dremel idea...but I really don't think that will fit into the throttle valve?

Does anyone know if there is a way to remove the throttle valve?

Wait are you talking about the screw INSIDE the carb?

Yes, When you take the triangular brass lid off of the top of the carb, There is an arm that moves with the throttle. That arm holds a bracket attached to the needle below the throttle valve. Where the arm is attached to the throttle valve, there are 2 screws. One of those screws is stripped out. Im starting to get frustrated with it so i'm going to try needle nose pliers and turn it out

doubt it will work though but vise grips wont fit.

You try needle nose vice grips?

yes i tried needle nose vise grips... they don't fit either....i did tighten the screw a little and after that was able to remove. I'd like to replace the screws with more durable stainless steel ones? Has anyone done this? I'd like to know the dimension of those screws to make it easier to find. I looked at home depot and lowes, but the second you tell them it's for a carb. they respond with "We don't do that here or We wouldn't have that here". They are so small.

the diagram doesn't show the screw size but will allow me to show you guys where the screw is . Where #2 is in the diagram( the needle set) right above that is a small bracket. Directly above that is one of the screws I am referring to. Anyone know the make and model of carb('03 400ex) so that I may try to contact them directly?

www.jetsrus.com has carb rebuild kits, I think they have stainless steel screws for the needle.

take your throttle valve or your other screw with you to a hardware store and pick up two new screws that are the same.
