I only ask this cuz everyone lately is saying how there shiz blew up... I think that ANYTHING with that many moving parts and that is mass-produced will have some problems on some of their bikes.. Anyway, I have a 04 450r and I LOVE IT! good ol kicker, no problems EVER and ride the shiz out of it.. I wanted to sale it and get a 07, but I think I would just be best off keeping and upgrading this one!

I haven't had any problems out of my '04 **knock on wood**. I don't have any intentions of selling it for an e-start or newer model...just because I would be losing my ***!

04/05's had crank bearing issues...they would lock up and motors would be toasted.

06/07 ER's have had electric starting issues.

The 06/07's produce an average of 3-4hp more than the 04/05's in stock form thanks to the 06/07's 12:1 compression and different bore/stroke.

Looks like an upgraded 04/05 or new 06/07 KICKER would be the way to go :)

My $.02

Only late 04s and early 05's had this problem.
Not all of them.

I have one of the first ones out of the factory serial # 4XXX and I ride it at least 3 hours a week and have not had one bit of trouble other than regular maintenance and regular ware parts (tires brakes chain)

I realy dont keep up on the mantance that well after the first year, but i do change my oils regularly.

id say keep the one you have because the diffrence in price, you would save could make a mean 04

not sure compared to the 04 or 05 but the 06 seems to be pretty reliable, the e-start problem came about mostly from user error in my experience.

I found out today that my friends crank bearings in his 04 went out.

They didn't lock up tho, they went out of balence or something and chewed up his stator.
He had exteme machines rip it apart.

His top end went because his Uni air filter kept falling off. And now his stator and crank bearings are gone. lol
Probably all related to the sand from the filter falling off I'd imagin.

After the first time it fell off id find a soultion to the problem not letting it keep coming off.

I had an 04, and just got an 07. The 07 has tons more power than the 04, with the same mods to both, HRC kit and Baldwin exhaust. The only thing I would change is that the 07 would be a kicker instead of an e-start.

Stay with your '04. I have an '06 and I wish i'd have saved my money and purchased an '05. The electric start sucks, I have installed a kickstart and I use both kick and electric. It still will not start with only the electric but it fires right up on the first kick. I've also had intake valve issues, plus the spindles and hubs are not as good of a design as '04-'05. Take the money saved and buy something you've wanted for the '04. I have many friends with '04's and they all joke with me about starting issues.

I have a 07 and the electric start works great, everyone has a different opinion though. If you are happy with the one you have keep riding it!!

the best year 450r to have will be once they are fuel injected(praying it happens in the next couple years!)
