Today im adjusting my stock rear suspension. The compression is set 2 turn out from full hard stock. I want to turn it up. What is the most you can turn it up with out doin damage because i heard if you put it on full hard u can break something. Im thinkin 1/4 turn out wont do any damage. I dont even think i will have to turn it up that much but i just wanna make sure.

Thanks:square

ummmm mine doesnt click. its a smooth rotation so how many turns would u recommend? Is the stock 400ex rear supposed to click?

Sounds like its broke. They must have clicks or you can get the valving in between holes and that can damage your shock.

the rebound doesnt click either. is there a way for me to ride because i had a big trip planned. also the shock is abt 2 months old and has about 10 - 15 rides on it. Should i bring it back to the dealer. If not how much do u charge for a service? Thanks

I called another dealer and he said as long as it turns its adjusting and that im good to go. Then i told him what jeff said "They must have clicks or you can get the valving in between holes and that can damage your shock" and he goes NOOOOOO who told you that?

they are a smooth turning adjustment.....1999-2003...the rear adjustment for compression on an 1986-1989 r clicks... so your shock isfine...no need for service

I hate that some dealers just think they know everything and they flat out dont!!! Dumb *****E$.:grr

OK now that i know it shouldnt click what is a safe amount of turns away from full hard to keep it?

09-03-2002, 09:52 AM
use it and see what works best for you...usually if your adjusted correct your never all the way in or out...dont worry about breaking anything except your a@# if it decides it doesnt like how you have it adjusted...just do one adjustment at a time and go from there...good luck

I'm telling you the 1999 400ex rear shock that I have right here clicks on compression and rebound.

well for now im not gunna get worried untill i am 100% sure on the clicking. So since in doesnt click what is a safe distance from full hard in case i have to put it there?

ok well i have another question which can get long and ugly.
Im a big guy weighing in at 230 and i wanna adjust the two collars on the top of the shock ( i think its the preload) Now how should the suspension be. I heard when noone is on the quad measure from the floor to grabbar and then lift up till the quad shock tops and and that distance should be 3 inches for the 400ex. Then i heard sit on it measure it and then lift the grab bar and that difference should be 3 inches. I also heard measure from the axle. which is it and are any of these even right?

Also how far down should i screw the collar down? I am going to buy a spanner wrench to make my life easier. Are there different sizes and is it possible to get one that will fit the front and back shocks?

Thanks
