I never noticed any lost in top end but I did notice lots and lots of torque (dunno why about the top speed). You'll notice easier starts in second for drag racing, it wants to wheelie alot, you'll be coming around a corner and pop the clutch (3rd gear or so) and it will want to wheelie.

there is a gearing calculator floating around here for the 400ex.. i think the 14t was a 7-8mph loss on top end, if i remember right??

7-8 mph sounds kinda high, no offense. I beleive me goin from a 15 to 16 was +- 5 so I would imagine that lowering a tooth would have a similiar result.

i have a 13 tooth front sprocket and i lose quite a bit of top end but it gets me out of the hole a lot quicker..........i wouldn't go to a 12t....but 14t is stock for a 450r......im not sure how many mph u lose

well, consider the fact that with a 15 tooth you are nowhere near your rev limiter in 5th, with the 14 you are revving out your motor more. A while back me and a buddy dragged our same speed 400ex's, we put a 14 on his and he would not only holeshot me and pull, he clearly had me on top end. Then we put on a 16 (had to take off the case saver) on his and dragged. He was pretty much even till top end then I slowly started creeping ahead. Results may vary and it's only like 15 bucks to try it, so why not?

YA im going to try it but thats weird they were both even top end wise. i figured the 15t would cleanly beat the 14t on top end.

knelson, i never thaught of the 15/ 14 tooth top end difference like that, i knew that it would not pull the 15 as well but i geuss i never put together that the 14 tooth actually might pull a higher top speed because it can pull the gearing. All those gearing calculators that say how fast you can go only are using the speeds assuming the engine can pull it.
