the inside of my swinger is all shattered (aka my carrier). My axle will teeter totter back and forth and up and down. Do I just need to replace the carrier??

Laz at GT Thunder posted this about bearing carriers:

Carrier - on a 450r - I prefere them in this order based reliability:

1. Stock
2. Aftermarket with hardened center sleeves (Baldwin)

The carriers that I will never run in my quad:

1. Any aftermarket carrier that does not have a hardened sleeve - that is most of them.
2. Tapered Carriers - have you seen the dyno charts on how much power they take????

start by pulling your unit down and inspecting it before ya do anything else. if the damage isnt all bad then you can get bearings and seals cheap at your lacal cycle supply.

there are chunks of metal coming out the sides of the swinger, around the axle. So i think i broke the actual carrier

I would disassemble it first before buying parts, check the damage then replace!

so a billet aftermarket carrier is not as strong or reliable as a stock?? I have never had to deal with these so I am wanting to be sure

That is what I have read, I am sure everyone has an opinion on this, but I have never had a problem with my OEM carrier.......I always check my locknut and bearings though.

nothing really wrong with the oem carrier except that ya cant use double row bearings. otherwise they're fine. as for the aftermarket billet twin rows.... any of em are fine.

Can we get some more info on the 'hardened sleeves'? I know there's a sleeve between the bearings but this is the first i've read about a hardened sleeve.

Yeha...took my carrier out last night...it is pretty much shattered. it is cracked all the way accross, and my hubs on my sprocket and my rotor and they are trashed
