I was thinking of buying a polishing kit (from home depot) and polishing the head pipe. Do you guys think thats a good idea or not?

well i used mothers mag/ aluminum polish on mine and i used excalibur ( which is the polish in the cotton cloth) on my stock steel pipe. im sure that any metal polishing kit will work.

there is a process called alumi coat...its used for headers and exhaust systems. the finish is close to chrome...but not exactly the same. im not sure if chris waters does that process but you could check with him. i checked at a local place and they want $95 to do it on a stock 400 header. i will try to get a pic to show the finish

You could also have it Jet Hot coated.

$95.00 to get it coated, why so much?

The polishing thing does work on the header, but it doesnt last long unless you are willing to keep polishing it.

I had done a "quick" polishing on mine during the first rebuild and it looked great for a while and then slowly turns brown again.

It still looks better than the ones that were never polished but its not anything to be proud of after it starts turning again, and its in a bad spot to polish.

the changing of colour was also a concern, i dont want to waste my time if it will turn brown after one ride

I remember getting the ceramic coating on the headers for a big block chevy in the past and that was a great product only it was like 169.00 with the price of the new headers included.

Hopefully the price will not be what makes me go for the complete LRD system:)

Let us know how it works and what you think when you get it Kenny.

If you want it to look good from now on out, get it Jet Hot coated. I did and it looks great, it's easy to clean and gets the compliments too. It also gets coated on the inside as well that makes it flow better. It will cost you about $100 to get it done and shipped.

Let me say that it does look great and with the modded welds in the headpipe, I can tell a power difference (probably the ground welds are working more than the coating)! However, (thats like a 4 letter word sometimes) if I ever thought I was going to 440 my 400, I would suggest going ahead and spending the $169 for the stainless XR's only oversized headpipe instead. Hindsight is always 20/20.:)
