I am gonna use an IR heater for my frame. I cant see the need for a batch oven for a while.

Hey Pappy what are you using for the big stuff?

Pappy

i built a oven 3ft x 3ft heated by a 56000 btu propane fired heat element. it will hold 500 degree's if i close the vents. i dont mind the ir unit...but ...u have to have a sealed room to do it...damn dust and such will wreck your work if any contaminents in the air. it just takes longer but for a once and awhile not bad...but i dont have alot of expierence with them

im going to try to see if 1/8th inch steel will handle it if its well insulated...we will see haha ive got 911 on speed dial

Woodsrider

So pappy, that oven is not insulated at all?

I do like how you did it though:D looks very basic, but how do you regulate the temp? Or do you just set the heat and watch the temp of the part with a themometer?

Pappy
09-02-2002, 09:45 PM
well...ive used it enough to know what part needs constant temp readings etc. i use a laser thermometer to register temps. i can use the heat panels and one unit...but its actually harder to keep the temp even. its very basic...and i am completely blown away by the work i have turned out so far. i am havin alot of fun and its supporting my habit. i took my quad to the local pc shop and they flipped, offered me a job and everything. haha...i make too much to leave the 9 to 5 as of right now...lol

it is made out of 3/16 mild steel. my dad is a welder and fabricator so it wasnt much trouble for him. the panels for the interior ....lol....i have no idea what they are. they are appox. 5/16 thick and are capable of handling temps in excess of 2000 degrees. when i do alumicoating i install them and maintain the temp at 500 degrees. this is just a learning expeirence....i may just buy a batch oven...i think they are in the $9000 dollar range. i am buying a new farm next summer if all goes well so it will have to wait for that...no room here...lol

Ok, sorry for that, I deleted the post and was going to put it somewhere else, so for those of following along at home, the question that 2R's answered was about the amount of powder used to coat pieces such as exhaust shields. The second part of the question was about reusing powder that does not adhere to the part being PC'd.

09-03-2002, 04:20 PM
i also deleted mine heee..
but you should not reuse PC powders

Just wondering what kind of prep work is involved with PCing, after the sand blasting?

Pappy
09-03-2002, 09:25 PM
the piece is taken to bare metal...and i mean bare..lol

any corners and such must be spotless. no dirt in any scratches either. then it gets prepped with some cleaner of choice and then its just about ready....just about;)
