View Full Version : Canadians (and other Non-Americans), help me out...

Many many many years ago, the evil "white men" came and took the land from Native Americans (some still call them Indians). From that day forth, we have done nothing but oppress them, hold them down, and we are the sole reason for all the ills in their lives. Go ahead, ask them, they'll tell you.

My question is, where else is this happening? There were obviously people and cultures native to Canada before all you guys got there, is there still the same resentment and controversy? What is your history in this respect?

LOTS of societies and cultures have been "conquered". It happened everywhere, all throughout history. I would like to hear some OTHER stories besides those in my own lands. Anybody know any Asian history? How about India and Middle East? South American? Where else is this still a controversy today?

I'll explain my reasons after a few replies...

Caledonia Ontario has seen alot of hostility from the natives. Road blocks, nasty fights, the police couldn't even keep them under control.

Personnally I find they are taking what they are given for granted and their demands from our government are now absurd. Most in my area live off wellfare and have no desire to work. They don't pay taxes if they have a native card. I know this is a big stereotype but the majority are a bunch of lazy drunks. They are not doing anything to help themselves (in northern ontario anyways, not sure about the rest of the country). If they want their land back so much then I say go out, get a job and buy yourself a piece just like the rest of us.

I agree with above! I live minutes from Caledonia. Get a job and buy your own land! Stop whining!

Japan tried to take over the world. The place where I live, Okinawa Japan, is actually similar to Hawaii. Okinawans are actually a different race of people. In the early 1600's the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa's real name) was overtaken by Japanese samurais during a 3 day battle. Okinawa didn't become an official Japanese prefecture (state/province) until the early 1920's and are still treated as lowerclass japanese citizens.

It's my understanding from a co-worker that Asians are notoriously racist towards one another. I was shocked that someone other than white southerners could be racist!

Many americans have a blindman's view of racism. Live (not vist) in a foreign country for a while and you will get your eyes opened with a quickness.

Well, let's not turn this into a racism thread because it will get closed!!

In Australia you have the aborigine people who are pretty much treated the same as native american indians. There are plenty of South american indian tribes that govern themselves instead of following the laws set by the government.

Like a few of the other Canadians on here have said , the Caledonia issue has been in the headlines for months now . Personally I think the Government should have stepped in and put every one of them in jail and cut off their monthly checks for what went on .... but then again , our government is so kiss-*** to the natives , that they would never do anything like that .

The fight over treaties , lands and so on has been going on since the white man stepped foot in this country . We bend over backwards for the natives here in Canada . They have access to grants for schooling ( everything paid ) , we build them homes , we buy them clothes , we pay their utilities , we send them checks every month , they can fish and hunt without a license , etc .

A few months back , there was major flooding and poor quality drinking water on a reserve on the James Bay coast , so MANY communities took in natives . Local , Provincial and Federal governments housed these people in motels for months . Guess what they did ?? They totally destroyed the hotels . Instead of walking out the door to go to the other rooms , they simply made holes through the wall , they wiped their arse with the drapes , they vandalised things around town , instead of putting a dirty diaper in the garbage they threw it on the ground 2 feet away from the garbage . I seen natives walk out of sears with brand new TVs , shopping carts full of clothes , new jewelery .... all on my dime . Our governments don't even do this kind of things for our street people in the dead of winter when it's 40 below .

I have native in my blood ... I have a Metis status card ( not a full Native Card) , and it sickens me to see how the natives of today ( not all of them) want everything given to them . We're not living in the 1700s .... we don't "owe" them anything .

The Ainu are another race of indigenous Japanese people. The Ainu are people from northern Japan in a area nowadays that is called Hokkaido. It took nearly 300 years for the Japanese to assimilate the Ainu. After the last battle was lost the Ainu were forced to observe Japanese customs and refrain from using their own. In the late 1880's the Hokkaido Aborigine Protection Act was passed so there would be a clear distinction between Japanese and Ainu people. At the end of WWII Russia seized many of the smaller northern islands as war booty. All of these islands were inhabited by Ainu tribes so they were once again force to adapt to a society. To this day Russia and Japan are fighting (legal battle) over those islands.

Currently legislation is in place to help revive the Ainu culture and educate as many native Ainu as possible.

Ainu are supposedly close relatives of the eskimos.

The discussion came about concerning the Hawaiian culture. I was talking to a native, and he went on a rant about all the evils of the "white man", about oppression, about legal battles concerning who actually "owns" Hawaii, and blah blah blah.

I told him he was lucky.

I take a very pragmatic view of life. Hawaii is a key military stronghold in the Pacific. SOMEBODY was going to eventually sieze control over it. While it may not be "nice", I think it was inevitable.

I say they were lucky it was us. Americans celebrate diversity. You can be Irish American, or German American, or whatever. If another society had conquered the Hawaiian Islands, I don't think they would be "Hawaiian" anymore. I think they would have been forced to assimilate.

Then I got to thinking, the same could apply to the Native American Indians. Most often, when a more-aggressive culture comes in and conquers, the natives are given a simple choice. Assimilate or die. But that didn't happen, we gave them money, land, allowed them to create their own governing bodies, and even gave them certain rights that aren't available to the general public.

Nobody wants to be conquered, obviously. I'm not debating that. But some things ARE inevitable. If we accept that fact, then it seems to me that we have been more generous than any other conquering society in history.

I agree with you Wilkins. I think we have (maybe not so much in the past) have treated the natives fairly well, besides I don't really think anyone can really call themselves natives, they probaly came from somewhere else before they got here or where ever they are anyways.

sorry if i offend anyone of the native race but Most of the natives around here are complete useless scums. Everytime i go to a town with lots of natives in it i see atleast 10 teenage girls pushing baby carriges around. I can guarentee(sp?) that everytime i go to towns like that there is atleast 1 or 2 natives drunk stumbling around. My cousins that play hockey go to reserves to play have had to get escorted to and from the arena because of fights and threats. Almost everytime i go to play there, there is always fights becuase of the BS that goes on there. I do have native friends and they have jobs and are hardworking people but alot of them are wastes of skin that sit on welfare and unemployment. Take this for example....at a town about 20 minutes away from me that has a native reserve close to that town and almost all the natives go to that town. Well they thought that they were getting treated unfair, so they decided to boycott that town.......Except for bars, liquor stores and Gambling places, says alot huh?

She said in a later interview with Canada AM , that her comments reflected the way the non-native people of Caledonia felt about the situation . A politician that actually spoke the truth ... can it be ??

I agree , she should be thanked for it . Hell Harper should get kicked out as Prime Minister and be replaced by this lady .... she get's my vote !!!!!

Yes, we do but many races and creeds abuse the government crutch that has been providing for them and refuse to fend for themselves. I true system based on merit would benefit EVERYBODY. It would put more people in the workforce and remove a vast majority of the leechers from the government's teety milk :D.

Simple theory - if you show a desire to suceed/excel you will be properly awarded or assisted. Too bad it isn't so simple to apply.

My thoughts: instead of handing out food stamps, welfare checks and providing FREE housing take away the free crap and put them to work doing the jobs that the "illegal" aliens have no qualms about doing.

Couldn't agree more...........what is right instead of easy will almost never be the path taken.

If your country and mine were only inhabited by natives they would still be argueing over tribe vs tribe instead of my race vs yours. The result is either constant war or one dominant people.
