And I thought havin quads around was expensive. Go to buyin aluminum wheels, new tires, led lights, and all the chrome it starts to add up fast. I have been workin on this for a week now and about to get her finished up and on the road. I finally got the yellow tarp in today and got it on. Still have to get the truck lettered, yellow flames on the trailer, 14 more led lights down each side of the trailer, and a lil more chrome here and there on the truck and its done.

How are you going to be using it?

It only has 515K miles on it with 79k on a complete inframe so hopefully (knock on wood) there shouldnt be too many major repairs on it Jerry. I have already spent a lil over 5K on truck/trailer though.

Scro- Im going to use it on the farm this fall then hire a driver and put it to work here somewhat local hauling mostly coal and maybe some sand, rock or grain also. Anything to keep it busy.

It's a Mack isn't it? What kind of motor does it have in it?

DieselBoy

that's a really nice mack. what kinda engine?

them are not cheap to run. you gotta keep those tires movin day in day out for it to be possible. and the higher fuel prices do not help. I got my rig license but never actually got a job doing it cause I'm just not sure I want to do truck driving... But it's a good asset.

I'm not even sure about this hydraulic excavator thing. I don't have the back for manual labor and it's looking like a bad idea. *Shrugs* I'll have to look for a backup such as welding...

Yeah its a Mack Vision. It has the Mack E7 470hp with Eaton 13spd. Im not too sure its gonna turn out the mpg i'm hopin but oh well. Seems like a descent motor. I looked at several other trucks and really wanted a Cummins but Pete's and KW's were too pricey for the year I was lookin at, didnt really want a Freightliner, and I wasnt too fond of a Detroit so for the price I think it will make a decent truck. If this works out though, I can see a Pete 379 in the future. :D

DieselBoy

So the E7 is a mack engine correct?

you're the guy with all the done up quads aren't ya?

You don't want a cummins. In all honesty if you are going to buy another over the road truck go with a Volvo with a Volvo motor. You cannot beat the ride and the fuel mileage

why not a cummins? for some reason my driving trainer said they suck but never went into detail why... I'm curious to know...

At one time Cummins used to be a good motor but their quality is just not there anymore. You get just a little bit water in the fuel and the injectors are gone.

lol, I really dont care for the Volvo's either. It seems like its a mile from one side of the cab to the other. I think they are pretty good trucks though in general. I about bought an International 9900 with a detroit but never got much feedback about internationals. They claim the 60 series detroit will pull the best mpg though. We have a KW T-600 with a Cummins and a Pete 378 with a Cat and they both have been good trucks. Had the KW for probably10yrs and the Pete for 4 and have had hardly zero problems with either.

We have 8 Volvo's and they average about 7 miles to the gallon. You can turn a volvo on a dime. International makes a good medium duty truck but there big trucks are nothing to brag about.

So far I've worked on the trailer alot more than the truck. New tires all around, aluminum wheels, new brakes, new shur-lok, new lights, new dump valves, had to cut the liner on the tailgate to be able to use the grain door then found out the grain door was welded shut, had to cut around and make a new door, a couple hours of aluminum welding here and there, then today we finished up puttin the wet line on the truck and went to raise the trailer and the cylinder is leaking like a stuck hog so its got to come out and new seals in and im sure I'll find some other stuff that needs to be done.

Oh yeah I do like Petes but a lil pricey. It's an Amercian trailer, similar to an Alumatech.

shiftfmx- yeah the W900's are pretty sweet. If I was gonna be the one driving I would have bought close to a new one also. A driver is gonna tear it up anyway so why give him an expensive one to tear up.

OK so they have 13 and 18 gears, now forgive the question of ignorance but id like to know why, seems overkill to me for some reason.. but there is a reason, what is it?

TORQUE. Obviously those things carry one helluva lot of weight.. The more gears the better.. I stopped driving truck back in the late 80's... I'm sure some of you guy's can elaborate on this more..

I hauled tires for Goodyear...

How is it in the whoops?

its because the motor make most HP from about 1500-2300 RPM.
the less gears you have, the further you will be away from that range.

if you have 13-18 gears, you can keep in right at the peak HP range.

its the same thing with quads, if the quad has a smaller powerband, it will have 6gears(banshee, blaster) to keep it in that range

my dad has a '94 379 pete with a 475 cat in it and i think a '03 wilson bi-metal flatbed (not exactly sure on the brand). his truck is lit up like a christmas tree though, lites along the botom ot the cab, front and back edge of air cleaners, inside the air cleaners, plus the usual roof lites, and then inside the cab under the dash and seats and i think theres some in the sleeper too.

you do not actually shift through all of the speeds, when bobtailing it is bacsicly like an 8speed, but you cna split gears and such to get the 18, you will harldy ever satrt in first and shift threw all 18 gears, probaly will never do that. The have 8LL, 10 spee 12 speed, 13 speed 15 speed, 18 speed, and i am sure i am forgeting some others.

Its nice for a mack, but i my self perfer a nice Western Star with a big cat in it. ***** Power all the way.

did ya think about getting a walking floor trailer, i know alot of people around here are starting to run them more and more, alot of the asphlat compaines are useing them also so they do not have to have the body up in the air. just a thought.
