front tire/rim size

My buddy is getting new rims and tires on his '04 450r. He's getting 20x11x9 rear, 22x7x10 fronts. The rims he wants are only available in the 9x8 size for the rears. If I'm correct, that's 3" of width difference between the tire and rim. Will that work?

Also, are the 22's the way to go for the front if he's running 20's in the rear? (trail riding and jumping, no mx)

22's are the way to go in the woods thats what I run on my 04 with holeshot hds but with the 20x11x9 9x8 wheels I have no idea. Think of the ITP baja rims they are nice.
