Most likely is the so;enoid make sure your battery is fully charged.Good way to test a so;enoid is take a screw driver between terminals on solenoid and jump them together be careful you will get some sparks but if it turns the starter motor its your solenoid time to replace

also check the fuses, connections on the battery terminals and make sure voltage regulator has good connection. "thing with the fins on it bolted to the frame by the battery"

try to clean all the terminals first and charged the battery. then check the celinoid. if all that fails then u need to clean ur starter. take it apart and clean it and the brushes in the rear side of it with some brake cleaner. thats what i had to do to mine just recently and its working perfect now

Check your ground and clean the terminals.

sounds like a weak battery. try charging it or u could jump it and then ride it for awile to see if it will charge its self.

Sounds like the solenoid. It'll make a clicking noise when you hit the starter button. Do what someone else said and use a screwdriver to bypass the solenoid, if it turns the starter you know it's the solenoid.

If a fuse was blown it wouldn't make a sound at all.

I just bought an 01 400ex last week and the first time I rode it it did the same thing to me. So I asked people on here for help. It turned out that my positive battery cable was loose both on the solenoid and the battery. I cleaned and tighened the connection and it works like a charm now.

Check and make sure the solenoid is not grounding out. I have a metal airbox and the solenoid was grounding out on the side. Was causing the same problem you describe. Good luck.

Its just a weak or dead battery, or bad connection.
