Overfilling

my 400ex didnt start smoking white smoke until i put more oil in it, the oil was low so i put more in it and i think i may have over filled it. Can this cause white smoke? why would this happen, can anyone just tell me why or let me know if this is most likely the problem. thanks!

so, it started smoking after u put oil in it? i would have to say that u overfilled it.

Is it truely white? white is moisture/coolant, and obviously its not coolant in a 400. Try running it for a while and see if goes away. Could have just been moisture in your exhaust.

Did you check the oil the right way? How did you check it? If it wasn't smoking before you put the oil it is possible you put to much, and it could make it smoke.

the quad didnt smoke what so ever until i put too much oil in. the dip stick reads as overfilled. so im guessing thats why it was smoking?

i did this to my 250x last week.. drain out the excess, make sure its right, and run it for a day.. it'll smoke for a few hours, but eventually it'll stop.

Was it because the weather is colder??? I changed my oil and It smoked white. Then the light bulb hit me...it dropped 20 degrees lol.

I never really overfilled my quad to the point that I got white smoke but I will tell you my experience with my toro lawnmower a couple days ago. I thought the oil was low so I filled it, but actually overfilled it beyond overfilled lol. I ran it like that for a couple days and every time I would put it on a slope, the motor would die and the mower would let out a HUGE cloud of white smoke......you would have thought someone's house was burning down :p

I am pretty sure this situation was the same for your 400. When you have too much oil in the crankcase, it is easier for it to get into the combustion chamber and there you get your smoke.

Are you sure you checked the oil after warming the bike then letting it sit for a couple minutes? If you checked it when the motor was cold you got a false low reading.
