View Full Version : 300 valve timing Question

09-01-2002, 02:06 PM
I have a '88 trx 300 and I am changing the timing chain. I have no service manual and I need to know how to retime the cam shaft. From what I've read here, all I need to do is put the eng. at top dead center and line up the marks on the cam gear. is this correct and how do i find exact TDC( is there a mark somewhere?)
please help, I want to be able to ride this weekend. thanks

no one here seems to be very helpful, does anyone know of a website or bbs that is for utility atvs?

yes, all you need to do is line up the marks on the cam sprocket w/ the cylinder, and put the crank at TDC. To do that, there are two small plugs on the left side of the motor. Open them up and put a socket and ratchet(17mm on 300ex, might be the same on 4x4) and look through the little whole while turning the motor over, and so should see a little arrow on the case or something like that. When the motor is at TDC, there will be a little mark on the flywheel that has a little T beside it. Line up the two marks and bravo, ur at TDC.
