i need a little help with a few things, first my exhaust right where it comes off the motor was glowing red tonight as it was sitting just warming up, is that ok? my quad is all stock and is still in the break in hours with 10 hours on it. and sec is i read a post on here that back fire is from running to lean, all i have done is removed the baffle from the muffler, would that be why my quad is back firing?it only does it when i let off the thottle. any help would be great.

The glowing header is normal, this is something that you would only notice at night and when the bike is very clean. The backfire is probably due to the jetting of the bike. The dealers and Yamaha send the bikes out as lean as possible so they pass the emission test... (even though there are no enforced regulations on these) Contact your dealer maybe Yamaha of Troy to check it what jetting the bike should have for your area. A

You definately don't want to be running lean at anytime, especially during break-in.

Stock jetting is 158 main, 42 pilot and my clip was right in the middle on the needle.

Throw your baffle back in and continue breaking it in, throw in a 45 pilot too. If you really want to leave your baffle out then get a 160 main and move the clip down one position on the needle. What's your elevation and temp? This is will help a lot with jetting.

For having both the baffle and airbox lid off you might want to go a little bigger on the main.

put your baffle back in and it should stop doing that i did that to my yfz450 and it shot flames out and everyone said put it back in or it could hurt the engine by sucking air in and bending or burning a valve up

Last time I checked, engines NEED air to be sucked in;) . Either rejet or throw your airbox lid and baffle back on.

well i have been given a lot of options on what to use on this site and yfz central so i went with a 170 and a 45 and dropped the clip one notch.with no lid and no baffle it seems to run much better sounds a lot different but good. so what should i look for and if im to rich will my only thing be fouling plugs. thanks everyone for all the help.

todd, maybe you can help me as well.
my buddy just bought a 05 yfz with a high comp. piston, cam, full sparks exh., no airbox lid. I was just wondering if you could give me an idea where to start on jetting it. I can't tell you what comp it is or what cam it is b/c the guy he bought it from didn't know which sucks.
I ride red so I have no idea where to start.
Thanks in advance for any info you guys can let me in on.

05yfz450 - What's the temp and your elevation? 170 seems a bit rich for just having the lid off and baffle out.

Damien - I would need to know your elevation, temperature, what compression the piston is, and what type of cam is in it.

ok im in columbus ohio area, summer is like 80's to 90's we ride in few place's here, i was told we are around 1000ft to 1800ft above sea level. depending on where we ride that day.when i bought the jets at my local shop the guy told me that he only had the jets for my carb in 5's. like 160 165 170 so i bought a 170 and 160 and he had no 165. so i was going with the 168 and 45 so i thought 170 was the best choice. let know toad thanks for the help.

The 165 would probably be perfect.

You won't see any smoke it'll just run a little boggy when you're on the main. Have you gotten the 165 yet and tried it out?

TOADZ400...

Does my jetting plan sound correct for starters?

2004 YFZ450-bone stock w/ factory jetting. It is sputtering big time on the top end. I just ordered some parts and here is my plan...

Texas 600 ft above sea level. 60-80 degrees F.
168 main
45 pilot
2 screws out on fuel screw
ncvq needle-what notch?

Thanks

What parts did you order? I need to know what exhaust, cam, intake you're going to be running. If you're going to be running it stock I would run it at 158/160 main with the 45 pilot (stock is too lean), fuel screw should be about right but it's always best to adjust it when you have it running and find what runs the best, as for the needle I would have it set at 2 clips down from the top because the NCVQ is a richer needle than stock. But if you're going to be running some mods all this would change, so let me know what you'll be running.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on staying bone stock for now.
