First things first, you need TRACTION get some razr II's or holeshots. After that if you have the money, big bore kit. JE or weisco 10:1 piston, hotcam stg2, cometic gaskets kit, you will blow past a z400, and 14t front sprocket.

Turn off your quad and get on the back with your buddy on his z400.There he wont leave you anymore..sorry i couldnt resist.
I assuming hes leaving you in a straight up drag race?A good rider should be able to keep pace with a z400 or even a 450 in the trails. While almost all slip ons will flow more than stock,on any aftermarket system the headpipe is where you make your money. If your looking for cheap mods try that if you dont want to open up the motor and do a cam and high compression piston swap. ;) Try a rev box as well

Are you losing that badly to a Z400? A simple pipe should be able to make a 400EX beat a Z400 in a drag race. On the trails you should have no problem keeping up with and beating a Z400 as long as you are a decent rider. There isn't much difference between the two performance wise.
400ex is money$

No you wont.If it was only that easy. With gearing changes theres always a tradeoff, accelleration or top speed. You may get more on the top end but your buddy will be shifting gears pulling away while your waiting for your bike to hit the sweet spot in the powerband so you can shift.Theres no free lunch:(

is ur buddies bike stock? i was riding with a guy that had piped z and i was topped out, but he still had another whole gear. if there r anymods done to the other bikes u will need to look into a big bore kit to keep up with them.

best mod for the money (free)..............make sure your throttle cable is adjusted properly. it can make a huge difference if there is too much slack in it because the carb won't be opening up all the way.

Thanks for all the input, sounds like I need to open up the engine. Kawasaki is supposed to put out their new 450 this weekend. The dealer said it might have reverse????

you should be able to beat stock z400 with a pipe and jet it i smoke the stock ones and i got 11:1 weisco rev box pipe jetted k&n air filter and especially on the trails cuz z's got less swingarm ground clearence so they get hung up tree limbs or what evers on the ground
