Hello everyone, it has been a long time since I have posted here, but I need some help. I have been once again trying to sell my 300, and about the time I said the word "sell" it has been giving me a bunch of problems. I had to replace the handlebar control unit (box w/ dimmer switch, kill, light and start button), the magnetic switch that connects to the battery, and the battery. My prob is that the brand new battery does not have enough power to crank over my hi- comp. motor. The first 3-4 times I used the starter, it worked okay, but it took a while to start. Now, the magnetic switch just clicks as if the battery were almost dead, even after charging. My fuses are new, I have gone through all of the wiring and re- taped the harness, but my problem still alludes me. I am thinking that maybe a higher amp battery may do the trick. Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, I just got back from a trip to california. My dad and I rented 2 400EX's from Arnie's rental shop and had loads of fun. Here is a couple of pics from the trip.

what is the part # of the battery you currently have in the quad? it should be a CYTX9-BS or equivelant. did you activate the battery or did the dealer? how long and at what amperage are you charging the battery at? fill me in and i will try to assist you

I'm sorry I don't have the part #, but I activated the battery myself. I left the lid off of the battery for 6 hours to let the acid turn to gel, and then charged it at 2amps for 3 hours.
Thanks for the quick reply.

well...you did right in the filling procedure...there arent any higher capacity batteries available that will just bolt in.

i would recheck all connections etc. if that doesnt work...return the battery for testing and or a replacement. most batteries that fit quads..bikes..jet skis..etc only carry a 6 month free replacement, but i dont know when you bought it..

My dealer has a 30 day replacement policy, so maybe I should just check back with them to see if they give me a new one. My last battery only lasted 6mos. and gave me a bunch of headaches in the process. I have heard about a certain battery that has more cranking amps in a smaller size battery, but I can't remember where I heard it.
Thanks a lot for your help, I appreciate it.

there is a larger( taller by 24 mm) battery that has 60 more c.c.a.'s it is the part # YTX-12BS a modification to the hold down os required.

i am not aware of any smaller batter that has more amperage for the 300 or 400 ex.

sounds like you need to rewind your starter. you hear your selinoid(sp?) clicking when you press the start button. take it to a starter shop and have them rewind it it will be about 100 bucks maybe more it was 150 to get the one of our warrior done...

Hmm, well thanks for the replies, actually this is the part that is clicking (follow link) http://www.servicehonda.com/HARD%20PARTS/ATV/TRX300EX_93_01/trx300ex%20frames%20page.htm if that helps any. I don't believe my stator needs re-wound, but who knows, maybe that is the prob. I have actually noticed something else, when I have it running, I tried hitting the starter button and it made the same noise, but if I revved it up, the starter worked, so that is why I am thinking it is an amperage problem.
Thanks for the intrest.

edit: uh-oh, the link doesn't work. Anyways, if you go to the battery page for the 300EX, in the microfiche it is #8, starter magnetic switch assembly

im talking about the STARTER not your STATOR. tap the starter with a hammer and press the button see if it turns then...dont like go incredable hulk on it and dent the crap out of it just lightly hit it like when starting a nail...? just a thought

Oh, okay. I just see too many people mistake "starter" for "stator". I tried that earlier this morning, but no luck. I sorta-kinda didn't expect it to work since I know my starter works in the first place, but just not enough juice to turn it over.
Thanks again.

how do you know that your starter works fine? we thought the same thing and it turned out it was fryed. if you really want to know what the deal is take the starter off and hook it up to a car battery with a set of jumper cables, then if you jump back about 6 ft in one jump because it comes to life and flies towards you then you know that it is something else lol

I know the starter works because it does. It turns over once in a while and verrrrry occasionally starts it. I am going to take the battery back next week before the warranty goes out.
Thanks for all the help.
