I rode my quad the other day for the first time. I bought it fromk some kid but i couldnt start it cause the battery was dead. When i rode it it felt like it had more power than my old 440ex. this is a 416 with a port and polish. Now it was smoking white smoke, you guys think my valve seals are shot? I have very good amounts of torque and power so i highly dobt its the rings. give me your imput. I dont have a compression tester so im just trying to see what you guys have to say before i putnew valve seals in it.

it could be your valve seals, the white smoke you see is actually a light blue. i wouls check compresion jsut to be sure, but valve seals are cheap and easy to fix.

Its worth a shot. From experience valve seals usually make your engine smoke on start up & then quits or when your giving it hell and let off the gas without shifting into a higher gear aka decelaration.

yeah... it could either. if it's happening when your mashing the throttle then chances are its the rings...

it only smokes when its going slow, if i pound the throttle it doesnt smoke at all

I would guess something to do with the vavles.....They adjusted correctly?

the valves are not adjusted correctly. The guy i bought it fromt said they need adjusted. I dont think the valve adjustment has anything to do with white smoke coming out the exhuast though.

so it only smokes when its low rpm........ are you lugging it when it when this happens? (loading the rings) if it doesn't smoke when you punch the throttle/decel, then i dunno. thats weird.

my 250 started doing this today.. if i crack it in 3rd it'll leave a white smoke trail..
idling in neutral it doesnt smoke but when i rev it, it does.
smoked a tiny bit when i started it but no big deal..
i just changed the oil and filter, maybe that did something?

how hard is it to change valve seals? anyone wanna post a how-to?

if it smokes when you throb the gas, then that's an indication that your rings are not seating, or the bore is worn/scored. Valve seals usually leak when it sits and oil leaks down through and into the combustion chamber and is generally burned off within the first couple minutes. When you rev it and smoke puffs out this is known as blowby. oil is leaking past the rings and evidently into the combustion chamber, being burned. However, worn valve seals can cause smoking on decelleration, but almost never on acceleration unless they're worn beyond belief. If it smokes at startup AND when you throb the throttle, then chances are both have worn.

For some strange reason a motorf will begin to sometimes start burning oil after a fresh oil change. I'm still trying to figure out why this would occur.

could it be because its overfull a little?

yes, overfilling the crankcase can cause smoking/abnormal engine operation.

It just depends on how much you overfilled it.You should be alright though.

well i drained it back down to level.. it smoked for about 30 minutes after, but it seems to have calmed down.. it only smokes a bit, although it is still smoking a little.
