A beautiful day as far as the weather goes with temperatures in the low 80's and plenty of bright sunshine greeted the riders of the Koontz Series as this round headed into Oakland, Maryland for a full day of racing. This was the first Koontz race this season at this location and the riders were excited about hitting up a course that had not been pounded by racing activity.

Paul Koontz, the man behind this series knows all to well that the young riders are the future of our sport. He was one of the first on the east coast to offer classes for 50, 70 and 90cc riders to learn the skills needed to one day become champions! Paul saw the value in adding a 13-15 Youth class limited to 300cc for this season and while the class entries have not been record breakers, it is gaining acceptance and growing.

Arriving a bit later then I had planned, I was unable to capture the morning race featureing the 50 through 90 classes. I did see the finish as Kyle Riley ripped his way to the overall aboard his Cobra!

Riders of varying skill levels compete in the Koontz Series, you never really know who your up against as you look over the field

Paul Koontz gives instructions to his course workers prior to the start of the race. Paul tries to balance a challenging track with safety for all the riders and spectators.

Even at a local, it can be hurry up and wait.

My own son was having the jitters about being out racing with adults. I tried my best to add no pressure to him and told him to relax and have fun. I do not think it helped:p

Pappy

The national anthem was on the loud speakers as I looked over Brent Sturdivant's shoulder to catch a glimpse of old glory

Pappy

The waiting may seem like an eternity, but when it is time for business, it happens fast. The "10 seconds" call was given and we were about to get under way!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:38 PM
A class was on deck and it was Zac Phillips racing to the first turn to grab the holeshot. Brent Sturdivant was charging hard from the outside

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:40 PM
Rounding the first turn, these racers were in for a seriously rough course between them and the end of the race

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:41 PM
B class was roaring to life as the first turn cleared of dust and braced itself for another onslaught!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:47 PM
B class rider Allan Greenwood was looking to do well today. It was not hard keeping track of him on his blue 450R

Pappy

Gary Whiteacre leads the Vet class into turn one

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:54 PM
I was unsure, but I think they had a staggerd start with a split Vet class. Koontz series offers 2 Vet classes based on skill level.

Pappy
09-17-2006, 04:59 PM
In any event, the starts were actually clean and I am happy to report no real first turn carnage:p

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:01 PM
Utility and C 16-25 were hitting the track as Nick Regalia was hard on the gas making up some time for a bad start.

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:03 PM
The first section out of turn one was an uphill with 3 different lines available. This seemed to help a few make some very early passes

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:05 PM
With all the other classes getting a clean start, I was nervous that the last class would be slammed by misfortune. It was not however as Joshua Dains was the first to drop the hammer and shoot for the first turn.

Joshua won the 90cc Limited class in the GNCC series last season, and has been riding hard in the 300 Youth classes this year. This is a favorite of mine and I can not wait to see him in action at Powerline Park!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:06 PM
Joshua has grown atleast a foot since I last saw him and he did not have any problems making his 300 EX do what ever he wanted it to!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:08 PM
Cody Hull has been running this series with Joshuia and from the pre race stories it looked to be a good bet they would be swapping positions in this race

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:10 PM
Josh can fill me in on this riders name, but he found a flat tire on the first lap and was out of the race:(

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:11 PM
After stalling his 300ex, Cody Hill was back on track and heading after the class. All I had told him was to have fun, learn what he could and get out of the way when needed:p

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:13 PM
With all the classes on the track, I hitched a ride to the only other open area I knew of. It featured a multi line hill that should have provided some action for me.

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:14 PM
The leaders had passed, with Brent Sturdivant closing in on the leader as lap one neared to an end

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:16 PM
With several lines varying in difficulty to pick, riders charged the hill and had no problem tackling this section

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:17 PM
To the far left was the marked course taking you around the hill, that left 3 more options if one wanted to assault the hill, each providing a little excitement as it was crested

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:18 PM
Riders looking for a pass could find it here if they could win the race to the top

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:24 PM
After the last riders had passed my position, I made my way back towards the starting area to see how we were making out. Brent Sturdivant had the lead and was on auto pilot, the other classes had settled into a nice frantic frenzy and my son was bringing up the rear:D In his few shouted words as he passed all i could clearly make out was"Rough and Wrecked":p

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:31 PM
With my son on the track, and a super tight track to deal with, I stayed close to an area where i could keep tabs on the action. The sun, the tracks position to the sun and it being held on the north side of a mountain all had me foaming at mouth because i knew the pictures would be tough to get. I decided to get up close and personal

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:34 PM
Brent suffered engine problems at the last GNCC round and was racing another Honda here. It must have been equipped with GO-GO Gadget power because he was rollin!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:35 PM
Only 20 seconds or so seperated the leader from the man trying to hunt him down:macho

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:39 PM
Sittin in 3rd, dave Muchisko was driving hard to catch 2nd, at this point in the race 3 seconds seperated them!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:40 PM
Without a clear shot of the numbers, I couldnt for sure tell who this was but i believe it was Todd Knippenberger running in 4th on his LTR

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:52 PM
Larry Sanner was running strong and was shoing that the Vet class riders could run inside the top 10:macho

Pappy
09-17-2006, 05:57 PM
Joshua dains was out front and making more then one adult rider wonder who just passed them:eek: Cody Hull was still holding second with cody Hill running him down...sort of:D Cody was learning just how hard Koontz tracks can be and was also finding out what it means to get beat on for two hours!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 06:02 PM
The white flag came out as Brent Sturdivant croosed the scoring area in 1 hour and 22 minutes. Those behind him had thier work cut out to catch him. They did not catch him, Brent took the overall, followed by Zac Phillips.

The top 5 were:

Brent Sturdivant
Zac Phillips
Dave Muchisko
Todd Knippenberger
Chad Mellinger

Pappy
09-17-2006, 06:04 PM
Allan Greenwood makes a stop for some fresh gloves and was back on the track on his way to his 7th place overall finish! Thats great riding from this B class rider!

Pappy
09-17-2006, 06:14 PM
Class winners were:

A Brent Sturdivant
B-Open Allan Greenwood
Vet b 30+ Larry Sanner
C Open Taylor Lazzell
C Open 16-25 David Whiteacre
Utility Open Ronald Varndell
B Open 16-25 Kenny Kelly
Vet C 30+ Garry Whiteacre
Utility 499cc - John Mellinger'
13-15 Youth Joshua Dains

I would personally like to thanks Nick Regalia for stopping and helping Cody get his quad moved after being hung up on a large rock. Nick ended up taking a strong 2nd place in C-Open 16-25 and I hope that your assistance did not affect you grabbing another win!

Cody walked...ok well limped away from this race with some more hard earned lesson that he can apply to his riding and racing. He brought me back a quad that will need some prep work before the next ride:scary: Start of the last lap he blew a tire off the rim

Pappy
09-17-2006, 06:16 PM
Somehow, I do not remember the bumper being that close to the frame:p It will go on his wall of broken parts.

I had alot fun shooting the pics and filling anyone who could not attend in on all the action. Enjoy:)

Great coverage pappy. The number 7 300 ex that was in my class was Dave Muchisko. His dad races A class. I am trying to talk dad into taking me out to Breezewood.:chinese: Oh ya and nice pics. I am looking forward to doing battle with Cody and everyone else at Powerline. You might even see me there on a whole different quad.:chinese:

I would also like to add that missing from todays race was Brandon Sturdivant. He was married saturday evening and could not attend.

Congrats you two!

As always great pics and good seeing everyone again. As for the race, that was one rough track! I don't know if it was the tightness with the rocks or what but I sure got beat up (the quad took a pounding also:p ). Ken no problem on helping Cody out. He wasn't stuck real bad but I know how much it sucks to have to get off the quad, I was right there and it only took a few seconds to have him going again.

Well we thank you a ton nick!

Cody was telling us all his stories from teh race and he said he was so embarassed because on the first lap he caught the Utility class and yelled at a guy to move...then he wrecked and the guy passed him. He did not say anything for a few minutes and i asked him if that was all there was to that story and he said..."Yeah pretty much, you can just repeat it 4 times because that about summed up that lap":D
