I like the looks of a '98. But if I were just wanting an S-10 to drive around and screw around in...Early 90s, late 80s.

I had a 94 with a 4.3 and a 5 speed. Drove it for 7 years and miss it, put over 100,000 on it and only changed the brakes, fule pump, clutch and shocks not bad for a having it that long and it was 5 years old when I got her

If you're going by body style it's all up to you. I actually like the older body style (hate how everything is round on the newer ones) but the engines obviously didn't have as much technology as they could've. The 4.3's were definately strong engines but they greatly improved them along the years beginning with the introduction of the 4.3 Vortec. From what I've read, the '94 and '98 had the most HP/Torque. Our '94 Bravada with the 4.3 Vortec (rated at 195 HP and I believe 265 ft-lbs of Torque) could pull an 18ft trailer with 5 quads on it like a 2-place trailer was behind it. The '98 I believe puts out a little more HP/Torque.

If you're going with the old ones, try and get at least a '93/'94 (some '94's had the old body style and some had new, it depends on which month they were manufactured). Those years were the most reliable because they had most of the bugs worked out of the older engines.

i liked my 92's ( i had 2, both standard 4.3 non-vortec ) alot. i liked my 01 xtreme too (vortech 4.3), but it started having a bunch of problems at by the time i sold it at 84,000 miles.

my 1st 92 had 215,000 miles when i bought it and 300,000 when i sold it and i never had an issue.

my 2nd 92 had 65,000 miles when i bought it, and 115 when i sold it and no problems.

my xtreme had 16,000 when i bought it. by 65,000 the door hinges were worn out and the door wouldnt close properly which made the interior light flicker off and on. the wheel bearings in the front were shot by 70,000. then it got real hard to start and the cylinders would randomly miss fire making it run real rough. i replaced the battery, spark plugs, wires, rotor, cap and button and none of it made a diference, so i sold it. if i get another s-10,

it will be a 92 for sure

Only problem that I've had with my S-10 is common with all S-10s My driver side mirror fell off. Which for everyone's information..Suck putting a new one on yourself. :scary:

Considering you like the older styles, I would definately go with the older S-10's. Those 4.3's are bulletproof. Our '90 has 246k miles on it and was still running strong until my brother totalled it.
