(National-NBC) September 15, 2006 - Mazda says it won't sell any of the 4,700 cars on board the "Cougar Ace" as new, and will give them new car warranties.

That means buyers get a used car discount, and a full warranty to boot.

The "Cougar Ace" was carrying the cars to the United States when it listed at 60 degrees, possibly damaging some of the cars.

Mazda says it will disclose the accident to potential buyers.

60 degrees is a pretty serious tilt. Usually, all the cars are secured by riggings so not much could happen in the way of collision, but with imports I imagine the unibodies might get a little stressed from the uneven weight, I imagine some of the cars might have to be put on a frame tweaker at an alignment shop and brought back even, although, some people might get a hell of a deal.

because 60 degrees is a huge tilt, so the weight of the car could actually damage itself.

Shipload Of Mazda Cars Makes Portland

DETROIT (AP) -- Mazda Motor Company says it won't sell as new any of its 47-hundred cars on board a ship that severely listed on its side south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands in July.
The ship, which traveled under the Singapore flag, was towed into Portland, Oregon yesterday, where damage was being assessed.
Mazda doesn't know how many cars were damaged or to what extent. But officials say all would be sold as used cars with full new-car warranties.
The fact that they were aboard the ship will be disclosed to potential buyers.
Most of the cars on board were Mazda 3 compact cars and CX-7 SUVs. But there were a small number of RX-8 and MX-5 Miata sports cars on the ship.
It took more than a month to right the ship, which keeled over so far onto its side that its propeller was out of the water.

wouldn't the cars all tip over with that much of a tilt?

No, on boats they have to be secure. It's a safe bet they're a little tweaked though.

How would you move in the ship if it did that :eek2: It would be like a jungle gym in there!

I Wonder if they design ships with this in mind. A room with only one door could turn into a deadly pit that would not be easy to climb out off.
