I just got some work done to my 440ex and I got the motor back yesterday and put it back in the fourwheeler and filled it with the recommended amount of oil and then I checked the oil and it was where it is supposed to be and today I went riding and then let it set a couple of minutes then checked the oil again and when I pulled the dipstick out oil stared pouring out of the oil tank so i checked it again and it was at the top if the dipstick and I was wondering why it is overflowing because we drianed the oil tank and the motor out before we installed it

there r 2 recommended amounts in the manuel. one is for if u flush the system out and then u need to refill the whole system and one is for just oil chenges. if the system stiill had some iol in it and u put the correct amout of oil for if u flushed the system then u would have ove filled it. do u get what i am saying, i think i sound confusing, but i am not very good at explaining things. maybe someone else can clarify. anyway. ur bike should not do that. it could be from extreme heat, causing the oil to expand.

How many quarts of oil did you put in it?

manual says 1.9 quarts if you don't change the filter, 1.95 if you do...I put in slightly less than 2 quarts and mine was over filled too...

where did you drain the oil from?

If you're asking me, from the drain plug in the oil tank, plus wiped out the filter chamber.

you need to pull the bolt out under the shifter to get oil out of the motor.

Yes, read the oil change, refill, and check procedure. You can't refill with the proper amount of oil all at once. You must fill the tank and then start the engine to normalize the oil level in the crankcase and then you can top-off the oil tank to the correct level.

I thought that might be it;)

Even though I HAVE a repair manual, that doesn't mean I READ it...maybe I should start doing that...instead of assuming that I know how to do stuff... :o

1.9 qt if u flush the system, 1.6 if u just change the oil. that is why ur oil is overflowing. next time do 1.6 and it should be fine

this may sound like a stupid question but, why when you change the oil, would you not drain it all and replace it with fresh oil?
You have to buy 2 quarts anyway.

this is from the manual. I mistook draining to mean "empty the oil pan"...and I didn't empty the crank case too... from now on I definitely will!

it won't all drain unless u tear the engine apart. i don't think that i would do that everytime i chenge the oil. just replace the filter and u will be fine

I have never had a problem draining oil in Any 400ex's (except the couple times I have seen the bottom of the oil tank's snapped off trying to remove the bolt), If done properly you use the dip stick to determine the final amount! you think I am going to put 1.95 quarts in and just call it good?
Krt400ex is correct that not ALL oil comes out, But how much is left in there? you dont know so how could you measure how much to put in? The dipstick doesn't lie:D
