I wanted to document my build this time, like I wish I had done on my R. Anyway, this build will take untill around february I'm thinking, so it will be drawn out. I bought this quad for $4500 and it is a bit rough. Every bolt is frozen, which was hell getting it apart. The kicker fell off and it's overheating a bit. It needs a bit of TLC, way too much too list as I normally get a bit carried away when building a quad.

Almost done. As you can see, even the nerf was frozen onto the frame. More pics this weekend.

Yeah, I didn't check it over good enough, but its still worth $4500 easy. Yes, everything will be PC'ed, blasted, or new. I'll have $10,000-12,000 into it when done, and it'll be extremely solid, no more ghetto. The motor will be mildly modded.

The colors are still being decided, but probably:
Black frame
sparkle red bottom arms and chrome tops
silvervein stem and swingarm
red plastic with carbon fiber
hipers

Can't wait to see the finish!

I assume that's a JRD frame right?? What are those two bars sticking out above the top shock eye on the second pic. The two horseshoe shaped bars?

The plastic mounts? The silver one is the mount, the black one is a line.

Just an update, I'm finally starting to make some progress. I'm getting new parts in here and there like bearings, brakes, etc etc.

Chassis: I really want to make this quad light, to get below 355lbs dry for freestyle, if possible. I ordered hipers and the front non-beadlocks (1.2lbs lighter) and I'm switching anything to aluminum that I can; like brake stay, hubs, shifter, and brake lever. Some milling will be going on also.

Motor: A stage 2 hot cam and a 13:1 wiseco piston is ordered. My Ferrera valves, springs, and titanium retainers are in. I should be sending it out to someone in a month or two for a top and bottom end rebuild. I'm still deciding on a builder. I'll probably get some light porting done.

sweet itshould look and sound sweet..I just put a stage 2 hotcam, and a higher compression pist, and a port &polish job....All I can say is :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: FASTTTTTT..After talking to some mechanics.and racers out here,They told me to stay w/stock valves, springs. So i just got new ones and had them installed also,Post pics as your going along w/your progress. We could all probably learn a thing or 2......

I'll try and grab some pics tonight. Be VERY careful with stock valvetrain. The oem parts are cheap and inconsistent, check out all the dirtbike forums, they're all dropping valves like crazy. Aftermarket is the only way to go.
Did you ride it stock? Mine was a BEAST stock. What exhaust did you go with? I'll post a few pics soon, but like i said, progress is slow.

In stock form it was fast as hell too..Now its just 10 times better :D........You are right I heard the same thing w/the stock valves..I have talked to mechanics at Temecula motorsports, precision con cepts, and Protec who did my work..They all said go w/stock,there race bikes have stock valves in them..At least thats what they told me,They said the titaniiums wear also.Stock is stock.. Another reason is my buddy has the same set up and has had no problems...If there is a problem I will probably go w/titanium...By the way I have a ESR pippe.

It was a custom built full exhaust from HMF for a 400ex/CRF hybrid. So all I have to do is tweak it a bit for the frame rail and get the muffler mount lined up. Only costed me $81 compared to a $650 Sparks.

Does a TRX exhaust fit in a CRF/400EX conversion? Or is it just not worth modifying and to just buy a custom exhaust? Thanks

Not sure, I would think it would bolt up to the motor the same, but as far as mounting I wouldn't know. The 400ex and 250r frames are very similar, so thats why I tried the 400ex /crf exhaust. I would love to try a TRX, but $$$ is a factor.

I run a Leo Vince TRX pipe on my hybrid, I think its an 05 header with 04 silencer n link pipe, the rear mounts further back as the motor sits further back in the frame then the TRX to the grab bar bolt with about a 1" spacer so it doesn't foul the caliper, doesn't rub on or melt anything without any pipe mods. I dont run a mount at the front of the silencer even tho the pipe has a mount for it and it seems OK hasn't come loose and no cracks.

To save more weight, you should ditch that shltty overflow bottle setup, and get a poolaris predator bottle, mounted up to the radiator scoops.

I like the look of yours far better, but it will get rid of those metal brackets and free up some space for easier maintenence.

stocktires
11-02-2006, 06:38 AM
Thanx bro, I'm already on it. I've already cut off the bottle bracket and will be getting a Walsh (Predator) bottle soon and an AFCO radiator too probably.
Just got in my X-33 Axle and WOW, its light and I dont even have to buy Aluminum hubs! I hope it holds up though.

Frame was sent out to Pappy on Monday, and a-arms and swingarm are at the local PC'ers.
Silvervein frame, and stealth black a-arms and swingarm.

Should go nicely with sparkle red hubs and red plastic, all black hipers, and other stealth black stuff...

No clue.
Ferrera valves, 13:1 piston, 06' CRF cam, and maybe some light porting. I'm keeping it mild. A stock CRF is already sickly fast. I'm just getting back into riding so this will be more motor than I'll even need.

That's about all you'll see for the next month or so. I've got to save some cash to finish off the motor.
It'll be a mild motor. 13:1 Wiesco, Ferrera Valves, Clean Up porting, Hinson, rebuild top to bottom by JC Racing.
Then I need to Order alot of Honda OEM parts (bearings, seals, bushings, bolts, etc) and alot of JRD stuff.
This build is taking WAY longer and ALOT more money than I thought, but it will be immaculate when done.

It is an issue, I'm not rich. But I'm an extremely detailed person and I want a quad that is totaly sick. I also want a quad that I don't have to worry about (cracking frames etc.).

If you think about how much time and energy that goes into finding the parts sending them out to powder, cleaning and reassembling it is way more time than most people put on the seat in a year.

BTW if you want a Custom colored or set up for the ONE INDUSTRIES 250R graphics let me know. I can do a mock up of them to let you see what they look like.

I'll be getting mine done pretty soon and will be incorporating custom colors and the 89 decals into them with a matching custom cover and the 250R logo. I'll probably do one with the 88 style seat as well.

Holy w00ter, what kind of swing arm is that? looks bad ***. If it were a woman i'd throw it down in a heart beat.

What all are you doing to that 300EX? Used to have one, i'd say its one of the funnest bikes to ride ever, still.

Thanks guys

The swingarm is crazy solid.
The 300ex needs a new carb my dad thinks (I do not). I'll put putting it on this weekend to see if it stops the sputtering.

Does JRD still have a website? It used to be JRDmech.com or something but its not up anymore? Are they still into making these chassis?

Glad to see your making that quad right

I know exactly who you got that from. Before you bought it, he wanted to trade it for my Old Lonestar 310R....

You got it from a guy in upstate NY correct??

Actually, no. I got it from a kid who had bought it in like Michigan. He didn't have it very long, neither did the Michigan guy. I was told the Michigan guy wiped out hard and injured himself seriously and hung up riding after. I have heard from others that it was up in New York or in that area also.
I'm sure the guy you are speaking of wasn't too into taking care of this bike.
This quad has been AROUND the block and back. It was in real bad shape when I got it, very sad. I had to replace shock shafts, bent axle, twisted stem, motor mounts that were made out of pipe fittings cramed into them. Every bushing and bearing looked like it had 200 hours on it. Nicely though no mainframe cracking or bending. She is going to be mint when I'm done though, which is why it is taking over a year to build.

It is an issue, I'm not rich. But I'm an extremely detailed person and I want a quad that is totaly sick. I also want a quad that I don't have to worry about (cracking frames etc.).
I like building quads just as much as riding sometimes...

hey, just wondering what you are runnin for a exhaust? also.... i just put a CRF motor into my jrd 250r , evertyhing bolted up great, just working on getting the right exhaust for it.

let me know.

I'm using a Yoshi header with an HMF muffler, all custom. As far as an exhaust that bolts right up, I don't know. Mine came with the yoshi header and a TC slip-on, it fit nicely but burned the plastic horribly. I don't think you will find any with a perfect fit. good luck!

ZRider400

was it a CRF450 header or a TRX450R header? i know they have diff bends. and it depends on what mid pipe you use

sparks made a handfull of custom pipes for the the houser crf 450 frame. i just happen to run across a guy that was parting his quad out, it fits perfect. maybe you'll be as lucky. i love the jrd chassis, good luck!

I have a laeger narrow chassis CRF and yesterday we just put an 04-05 Motoworks pipe on it. Fit awesome, just had to cut the end of the slip on where it meets the head pipe, rotate it and reweld it, then we CNC'd a bracket for the lower mount and a spacer for the upper one. Fit awesome and looks amazing!

All the thanks goes to Jay at BCS Performance!!

Derek the quad is looking awesome, nice to see more hybrids popping up here and there. If you end up revamping your intake setup let me know because we have been doing alot of work with them and have a series of billet adapters made for the lt500 intake boot.

Thanks Rob,
Yeah, the hybrid is the best, pretty much done now with the quad. The last mods were to put a TRX head on with a port job, added a Stage 2 cam and got rid of the junky Rossier exhaust that had more angles and welds in it than a 72 Cadillac! Making the same power with less compression, back to pump gas!

I'll keep you in mind about the intakes. I'm sure I'll catch you at Mototown at some point. If not in about a month at Walden.

The pipe looks great and like you said it looks alot better then the Rossier that was on the bike before...

I got lucky and YFZ yoshimura pipes were a direct bolt on to my YZ's so i lucked out on having to worry about exhausts...

Yeah, I got the newer material for the bushings from JRD, looks like really good stuff. They said the older material was not so great.
