Earilier today I saw this dumbass riding a 450r down my street with NO EXHAUST not header nothing. How bad is this for your quad?

not the best idea. you can bend a valve that way.

wont really bend one, just warp the hell out of it.

I'm surprised it even ran. Oh well, not your engine. Let him destroy it, he'll be paying for it.

as long as the header comes off the block as leat 4inchs shouldnt be to bad, i wouldnt ever do it, or try it, dont intend to...but yea if nothings ther at all, theres gos a valve...

how loud was it. Because I have started my R with just head pipe before and it was way to loud for my ears.

sounds kinda like bubbles poping

i started my 400 without the header on it by accident once and it made this weird popping bubbling noise. it wasnt loud tho but it sounded like it would have had no power at all

u will burn ur rings out like that and u will hurt ur valvetrain. it is not good for ur engine at all, and it will cause alot of power loss and premature wear. same thing will happen if u run it without the silencer, just not quite as fast

The only reason you could burn up your piston when not having a silencer on there at all is if you dont rejet. But if its jetted correctly it wont hurt it, you'd more than likely loose more power compared to having one on. But its just a myth about burning up rings and valves if you dont have a muffler/silencer on. Back pressure is not needed (two strokes are a different story), certain amounts of restricition only give you power in certain RPMs.

I saw a guy at Little Sahara once riding around in the campground on an old Warrior w/o any type of exhaust and he said he'd been running it like that for over a year trying to get it to tear up. There was carbon all over the place.

Wouldn't it loose compression with no header on?

no, that is determind by the valve seal and the piston condition.

if the valves r not sealing properly, then u will loose compression. if the piston or cylinder wall id worn then u will loose compression from blowby.

the exhaust valves seal off the port to the pipe, so u wouldn't loose compression unless there was a leak

Can valves snap from running no muffler?

nope. they may distort, but that is about it

So is safe to run no muffler/packing?

u will be alright without packing but u will lose power

Wont it rev up faster?

Wouldn't it gain top end power and loose bottom?

I would think the opposite.

With packing you have a compressed material to absorb sound/pressure waves.

Without packing you have a bunch of empty swiss cheese holes to cause turbulence in your pipe.

I'd think you'd get better power with a packed muffler. (more efficient air flow).

so the valves would be fine? Would it be harder to start?

it shouldn't be harder to start

The real queston should be: "Why would I want to run my quad without any packing or no muffler?"

The answer: "There is no reason." You get better power and sound out of a properly packed and tuned glass pack style silencer (which is what all of the race pipes are).

You can fry a valve causing it to warp, get brittle, etc and busting off and trashing your engine if you don't rejet the carburetor to run a straight pipe setup.

The best rule is, just don't do it.

Right now my quad is in the shop with a broken valve.

I been runing it with a 3 inch wide core. Could that be Why it snapped?

I like loud. It dont sound like **** if you like loud. If you dont like loud then your going to not like the sound. Depends what you like. I think quiet pipes sound like **** but thats my opinion.

Make your stock pipe or whatever you have on now a shorty, then it will be loud.
