View Full Version : 2006 GNCC Series Round #10 "The Stomp" Yadkinville NC Afternoon coverage

Round #10 of the GNCC series was back in full swing bringing the racers to Yadkinville North Carolina. This area is wine country and local tours were available for those interested in seeing the vineyards.

This is also Nascar's heartland, and it was a mix of atv, bike and car haulers located in just about every parking lot one could find. There were no nascars entered in the world of XC racing but the quads were every bit as clean and ready as the cars you would find on pit row of Charlotte Speedway!

Racers, friends and crew busily set up thier pits and chatted about everything from racing to politics. I would say that deversity has hit the GNCC series and all manner of people are now involved as the sport continues to grow.

Utility Mod rider Jim Stack has one class win this season but has been running the WPSA series and getting himself noticed infront of millions on ESPN.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:05 PM
The riders were called to the starting line which was on the powerline this year. I took a vantage point that would allow me to catch the racers as they crested the hill and rounded the first turn. Santo Derisi awaits his time to do battle at the Stomp.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:09 PM
After the National anthem was sung, the engines were warmed up and it was time to go racing! TEN SECONDS blared across the loudspeakers and in a flash the flag was waved it was time for this round to get underway.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:13 PM
I could not see the start but the thunder from behind the hill told me that they were coming, and there wasn't anything slowing them down:macho

I picked out Chris Borich in my lens and it appeared he was getting the better hand on the field as he headed for the first turn.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:16 PM
I should have known better then to think I could get away with focusing my attention on Borich as Ballance railed to the inside and headed for turn two taking the holeshot and the race lead.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:19 PM
Brent Sturdivant gets out of shape at the start but would face a DNF on the day when his engine locked up.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:20 PM
Pro roost is something that must be appreciated:p

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:24 PM
Pro AM launched off the line and it was #31 Taylor Kiser getting the holeshot

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:25 PM
Kiser, Lenig and Morphew head for turn two

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:30 PM
The highly touted 4 stroke A class took to the Stomp and it was Brandon Sommers winning the race to turn one

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:31 PM
Richie Brown and Donald Ockerman work thier way to the second turn and head off after the leader

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:33 PM
Darrell Bozarth secured the holeshot in Open A

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:35 PM
Spencer Dickerson was late off the line and heads off chasing down the pack.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:36 PM
2 stroke A/B only had 2 entries this round. Chris Moore grabbed the holeshot

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:38 PM
Ryan Schockling had 5 wins coming into this round, 6 after this round!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:45 PM
Open A rider Cliff King tangled at the start

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:49 PM
Junior 25+ had Gregg Stewart ripping through the first turn. Gregg went on to win his class!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:50 PM
Jim Pinkston right in the thick of things

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:55 PM
Senior 40+ rider Frank Grimplin heads into the first turn aboard his Polaris

Pappy
09-10-2006, 01:59 PM
Vet 30+ rider Jon Chambers came charging into view and was looking to have a great start

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:00 PM
The hard charge ended abrubtly however....

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:01 PM
Jon was getting bucked off wether he wanted it or not

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:03 PM
Thankfully the quad on his left was able to get ahead of the falling rider

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:04 PM
He hit the ground with a resounding "thud"

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:06 PM
Thankfully rider and machine were ok and Jon went on to finish 10th in his class

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:08 PM
4 Stroke Stock A/B had only 5 entries, but I suspect several new additions to this class for next season.

Jeromy W Evans grabs the holeshot and took the win!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:10 PM
4 Stroke B's Brent Foltz was the first around turn one grabbing himself a holeshot. Brent went on to finish 5th

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:11 PM
Brett Marksbury and Matt Hendrickson drag race to turn two

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:13 PM
Kevin Patterson chasing after the field

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:16 PM
Open B rider Nathan Wallpe got crossed up allowing Tyler Moore to grab the holeshot. Nathan's unfortunate luck had no effect on him as he got back on track and finished an outstanding second in his class.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:19 PM
Everyone swinging around Nathan had quads getting clipped and Denny Carson was one of them.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:27 PM
With starts completed, I made my way to a section where I could head off the leaders. Radios crackeled with garbled messages as fans and crews worked around me. Noone knew who was in the lead, but shortly a "They're coming" was heard from a spectator and instantly the noise level went through the roof as the top runners weaded back into the woods.

I am no expert, but ballance's key to success seems to be his ability to slip through the tree's effortlessly. I almost missed him as he came out of nowhere. There was almost no warning of his approach until he was right there and then he was gone.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:30 PM
Borich was the next rider to rip past me with Bithell hot on him. There was no grace in the field behind Ballance, they were going all out and even the tree's shook as they passed.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:34 PM
There was almost no time between the top riders as they came through the woods in a pack, all looking to eat the rider in front of them. The complacency that is found in the pits and on the starting line long gone, this was a war.

Yadkinville's tight twisting course left no room for error and lappers would soon be encountered adding further to the fast paced confusion.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:36 PM
Todd Demaree was in the lead pack charging hard

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:38 PM
Smiley doing everything he could to keep the leaders in check

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:41 PM
Joshua Ribley ended up finishing only 3 laps.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:44 PM
The train of Pro riders past, there was a brief pause in the action before the other classes were hard at doing battle in front of me.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:46 PM
XC racing is supposed to tight, add to that the speeds of the top riders and it can get scary just spectating!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:48 PM
Pro AM rider Todd Rothemel hammers his Outlaw through the woods

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:54 PM
Open A rider jonathan Shaff on his way to a 7th place finish

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:56 PM
The second lap gets mixed up and keeping track of what rider is where is almost impossibe, especially back in the woods.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 02:58 PM
There was another train of riders besides the Pro's that were not hard to hear when they came through.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:00 PM
Jim Pinkston riding on and giving me a big thumbs up!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:04 PM
Ed Atwell just was not going to have a good day.

He clipped a rootball and crossed up sending him into the dirt

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:05 PM
There was a yellow jackets nest in the rootball, but that was the least of his worries:p

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:06 PM
Ed bounced back after taking a good hit

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:08 PM
Ed's day was not going to get any better, as this is the last time I would see his quad in this condition.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:11 PM
The last I had heard was that the fire resulted from his roll-over.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:33 PM
The race wasnt even 2 laps in and already we were getting reports that the Pro class was having issues with lappers. Last year it was dust, this year it could come down to lapped riders.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:36 PM
Pro riders getting jammed up is not how anyone wants a race to be, but it is a fact of life in the GNCC's

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:40 PM
I had set up on a corner to catch the Pro's the next lap but got blocked and couldnt get the shots. (Joe Borich and Jimmy are to blame:devil: :blah: )

I went to the Pro pit area next to try and see what was happening and get to a spot where I could pick up a bit of race info from the announcer.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:44 PM
Keeping an ear for the Pro's and an eye on the rest of the field, I suddenly noticed how hot it had become. The humidity was up and temps in the upper 80's had me feeling more like I had been racing instead of taking pictures. The dust was not the big issue it was last year and it was not quite as hot so I will say the weather did not effect the racing :p It did help lemonade sales I am happy to report.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:55 PM
Adam McGill being hounded by William Yokely. McGill finished the day in the 5th spot. Thats great riding Adam!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 03:59 PM
Bryan Baker came around the corner with Chris Borich damn near hooked to his grab bar. They went out of sight in the same fashion. Baker went on to hold and took the 3rd spot!

Borich would have to settle for 4th which I know did not make him happy. You don't settle for anything less then the top spot when you are at his level.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:02 PM
From the looks of Brandons bumper i would have to say he planted himself somewhere along the 10 mile course. Finishing only 3 laps, Brandon would finish in the 17th spot

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:04 PM
Bryan Cook in for goggle and fuel. Bryan finished in the 8th position.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:07 PM
Santo Derisi has been riding consistant, but not placing where he would like. The Wisp round has Santo finishing in 8th and at the Stomp he was looking to better his finishing spot. 10th was all he could grab on this day.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:09 PM
Chris Jenks absolutley flew past me down pit row and looked to be riding hard. Chris took home the 9th spot

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:10 PM
Andy Lagzdins rolling out after a fuel stop. Andy just missed a top ten and finished in 11th

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:13 PM
Todd Demaree had 2 more laps to go when this picture was taken. Todd walked away with the 12th place spot.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:15 PM
Rhett M Butler followed Todd in and took home the 13th spot

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:22 PM
With the white flag out, and the leaders reported due in within minutes, I ran over to the last few turns to see how this race would play out. We had been informed that Yokely had taken the lead and that he was moments away from taking his first win of the 2006 season.

Everyone waited, wondering who would be first out of the woods but we recieved nothing. Static crackled when finally one of the course workers radios came to life as the tale was told. Loudly and in a much excited tone, the worker relayed that lappers were in the way and that the Pro's were pushing them out of the way! Less then 19 seconds seperated the top riders as they were bunched up from 1st to 10th. All we could do was listen for more info, and when it came it was not good. A rider had blocked the course and a bottleneck had formed.

Finally, the growl of a fast moving quad could be heard in the trees and it was Bill Ballance heading for the checkered flag!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:24 PM
Duane Johnson followed ballance across the checkered flag 8 seconds later!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:26 PM
Bryan Baker grabbed a podium spot and his best finish this season by finishing 3rd!

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:28 PM
Chris works the last corner before the checkers to take home 4th

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:29 PM
Adam Mcgill ripped his way to his second top 5 finish this season. This is one talented young rider who will have his shot at being number 1. McGill rounded out the top 5

Pappy
09-10-2006, 04:31 PM
The finish was a heart breaker for Yokely. Going from first so close to the end to 6th will only ramp up his determination for the next round.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:34 PM
I have to post 3 filler shots as I was plum out of room to get podium shots.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:35 PM
Once I get my podium shots in I will replace the commentary and pictures. In the mean time...have a look at one worn out holeshot:eek2:

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:38 PM
Can you say 300cc youth production next season:chinese:

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:46 PM
The afternoon riders run the gammit of should be Pro's to wanna be Pro's to those that just want the race to finish so they can get a beer:p It does not matter to me what class racer you are, i like the quads and the riders usually have speed and that makes for good pictures.

Gary Davis made the trip all the way from Texas and finished 7th after completing only 3 laps.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:51 PM
Brent Marshall rides in the 30+ Vet class. He finished 3 laps and took home 18th in his class

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:55 PM
40+ rider Gary Belbeck completed 1 lap. I did not get to chat with him after the race but he posts on this site often so I am sure he can fill us in.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 05:58 PM
Fred Mudd races in the Vet 30+ class and also does all he can to get great shots and coverage of all the races for ATVriders.com

Fred finished in 15th after completing 3 laps

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:01 PM
Open B rider Jeremy Benson riding his way to an 8th place finish

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:04 PM
Tyler Moore is another Open B rider. Tyler finished in the 11th spot. I was happy to draw a dry race to cover, after last year it was a real drag posting pictures of mudballs with 4 wheels:D

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:15 PM
Brandon Sommers is on a mission. This young man is climbing his way to the top and appears to be doing it with a style that others should follow. Always smiling and charging hard, Brandon will one day sit on pro row. He had to settle for second at the Stomp, but you can put your money on him to rectify that next round.

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:18 PM
Jonathan Shaff finished in 7th this round in Open A

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:21 PM
Vet 30+ winner was none other then Thomas Wright

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:27 PM
Some riders still had plenty of energy to give her hell coming through the last few sets of turns on the final lap

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:28 PM
Others seemed like the race took a heavy toll

Pappy
09-10-2006, 06:34 PM
No matter how you finished, as long as you go home in one piece its a good day.

I hope you all enjoy the pictures and coverage. I apologize it is not as long as others but I have to do the morning race also so I have to have a stopping point.

It was a pleasure chatting with a lot of you at the race, it was an honor to get some shots of you all and I hope to see everyone again track side soon.

200-300cc Youth production in the GNCC Series for 2007
I was asked by several people this weekend to get an email campaign started to have a 200cc-300cc 13-15 Youth Production Class included in the series for 2007.

If you would be so kind to take a few minutes to send an email requesting this class we would appreciate it.

Please send the email to carrie@racerxill.com

Thank you in advance

I think they would be better off just changing the age requirments in the sport class to 14-16 and letting them start on the last row in the morning class.. That class has averaged about 7-8 entries per race this year.

I see your point, but I dont think some youth riders would be able to handle some of the terrain that is included in some of the races. I would be ok with sending my son on a few of the tracks, Yadkinville being one of them. Others would cause me to think twice (Wisp, Ironman, etc)

I did notice how low the entry numbers were in several classes. 2 to 5 IMO is not enough participation to justify a class, but hopefully they will fill up.

Pappy.... Great Coverage.... Great Photos.... i might have to get a hold of you to get some of the Pics that are of me....

I was also the 1st person to come up on the other Open B Guy that stalled his Quad and i guess that would make me one of the lappers that was in the Bottle neck there at the end....

But in 100% honesty ... i along with 3 other riders NEVER Would have been Lapped or in the Bottle neck had ONLY ONE Person gotten off their quad and pushed it into the clearing, 20ft away and it would have rolled down hill (instead of trying to start it for 15+ Kicks) ... I tryed to push him but by clutch wasnt going to let me (she was a little tired)... then finally the course workers and spectators finally Got the guy out of the way by rolling him into the woods with him on the quad still... (I chuckled at that) but it wasnt till after 4 Pros had gotten around Yokely .... I feel really bad for Yokely and hope he comes out at Unadilla with a FIRE ....

We (atleast I) couldnt follow what we were hearing about the bottleneck. The guy on the radio kept yelling they were pushing lappers out of the way.

I am a Pro at moving over, I should give lessons:D

Im getting pretty good too.... LOL.... but starting from the last line gets really hard especially on a 10 mile track and slow ups in front of us....

But yeah... they where pushing 1 lapper out of the way and then the rest where just darting left and right trying to get out of the way....

About 99.5% of us ride/race strictly for the fun of it. Your in the wrong class and certainly looking at the wrong quad if your wanting to make any kind of income at it. Besides, if your name has anything to do with what I think it does your probably more interested in smoking left-handed cigarettes than training/focusing for any kind of athletic sport.:ermm:

HAHAHAHA @ left handed cigarettes....yea, its all in the fun. if it wasnt i dont think any of us would ride til we couldnt walk when we pratice, dump our whole paycheck into our quad just to make it look good (gump has one of the nicest lookin yammys out there) and then pay enough money to buy a keg or two just to come out of the trees with blisters, broken parts, sore muscles and a 8 by 10 hunk of wood, if you happen to finish descent....you look at a gncc or any harescramble race and youve got atleast 100 riders, about 8 of them actually make a living racing, so if you're in it for the money, you really do need to quit your day job, train 8 days a week, drop 20 grand in a bike and then maybe you could make a few bucks doin it. but for me and the other 98 guys out there, its just plain old fun....

All I can say for sure is that Kawasaki has very definitely NOT called me. Not even by mistake. Not even to get someone else's number. Or as a joke.

I agree totally that if you are doing it just for what you can get you sure won't last long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the guys who have gotten to the top and get paid for doing it had to be committed and mega talented to be where they are. There probably have been some fortunate enough that they had fewer financial restraints than the rest of us but not many people get out and beat the stuffing out of their body, rattle every bone for 2-3 hrs unless they have a love for the sport. That is why so many come and race one race and that is it for them.
I raced last year in vet class with Mideast and I DID give it everything I had and the ONLY plaque I got was at the end of year for my points finish. The year before in vet was pretty much the same....BUT I am still here thanks to God allowing me and my deep passion for the sport and a very supportive husband!!!! This sport makes me feel alive even though I think I might die at the end of a race sometimes LOL!!!!!!!!:D
