i am very detailed person and couldent help noticing the frame and motor on Joe Byrd's quad. it a 04/05 version. if you look at where the frame welds up near the grab bar you will see it is a 04/05 design. and the motor is clearly an older design with the location of the clutch side oil fill hole. you may be saying why should i care? well seeing as he is now factory sponcered shouldent he be riding a 07? i thought the newer versions where faster because of the upgraded motor. i dont really expect any responces but i just found this intersting. the pic is from the Moto X race so it is very recent. anyone with any insight is free to state it. but please dont post just to say i take too much time too look at pro quads.

I know in xc there were a lot of riders going back to their 05 bikes instead of the 06 models. I also heard of some switching the front ends back to an 05 and stuff like that. Maybe it has something to do with all that just the way it handles and stuff.

if i were racing XC i would rather ride a 04/05 due to the fact they have a oil cooler.

i was thinking it was maybe because he felt more comfort on the 05 rather than his new bike. and im sure that if it was only for the oil cooler that FACTORY HONDA could custom make one if need be. it may also just be his practice bike. there might just be more power potential in the older motor.

i've been hearing the more potential in the motor rumor a lot lately. some people say you can get a lot more out of the 04/05's.

more power out of 04/05's:confused: wow this is confusing me, especially all the bandwagon jumping to the newer models for more power and it could turn out to be the other way around, hey if anyones lookin' to trade their 07se off my 04 is in mint condition:D,, :D

it is a 05 and it is his race bike. His motor builder (dasa) get's alot of power out of the 05 motor plus the tranny is better and the front end is better

I've known about this for awhile now.. Alot of guys around here are switching back to the 04/05 trx's also because supposidly they can get alot more power outta the 04/05's vs the 06 motors.

Janssen Motorsports let me in on this and told me that they are snapping up every 05 hold over in the area..

i know that his practice bike at his house that has all stock motor but a full exhaust, walsh and axis suspension, axle, and tires and rims, is an 06. But i didnt know he was racing an 05. He may be more comfortable like others said. But i know his and heather's practice bikes at their house are Both 06's.

With that pro class being under production rules wouldn't that rule that Joe is using an illegal set up since the 04 and 05 machines are no longer production models? I know that nothing would ever come of it but I thought that may stir the pot a bit any ways.

The 06 bikes do not hold up near as well I have had 4 06s and been throw 5 trans, 2 cranks and a set of cases not counting the normal wear and tear parts. I had on the the bottom end had not been touched on just piston, head, cam,CDi and the 1st time I rode it the counterbalancer came out the front of the motor. The 3rd bike the trans went out the 4th ride on it. And the last one was new in July and the trans is out of it. Also the 06 motor is hard to get the higher numbers out of it is possibale but it is more work for sure. The front end pushes alot more on a 06 but that can be fixed with 05 spindles and hubs. I am ok with my 06s now that I have the gear problem fixed (I hope) and have the 05 parts on the front end. Now if they will last until my 07s get here is Dec. I made the whole year in 05 on 3 bikes and I rode alot more than I did this year. Thumpin there is a 2 year cushion in the rule he will be fine until the 08 season

from what i know... couff couff locately... they found a way to get all the power out of the race bike last year.. and its prolly still teh motor to top... so why switch when ur doin it all right in teh fisrt place.. thats y he isnt worried bout switching to an 06 or 07, y bother with it when u already got the one to top... i do know how many hp he does have in his race bike but i'm not suspose to say.. lets just say its almost crazy to get it outta that motor.... and bout his practice bike being all stock, yea true, but dude honda sent him 16 bikes rite aftre the season started and i believe 10 of them where set up teh exact same to the race bike so i think he practices with both stock and worked

you all seem too be conferming what i thought. more power out of the older motor, better hadling with the 05 frame, and just pure comfort of the older bike. it just didnt make sence to me why honda would put out something new that is not as good as the year before, but oh well... just shows you how good they get it the first time :D

i agree i had a 04 honda and that quad i rac`ed all season with noormal wear and tear. i boght a 06 and i think the motors nothing but problems so i switched back to a 05 model and im way happier

it seems like the XC guys are half and half.

some on 06's with tamed down motors and 05' front ends

some on 06's pretty stock

some on 05's...

im looking at Pro and the Top of the Pro Am class.

guess they just run whatever works

The reason Joe runs the 04-05 model is because of power. He's making I believe 4 or so more hp out of the 04-05 model then the 06. The 06 cylinder head I believe doesn't have as much volume and just doesn't make the peak numbers the 04-05's do.

he is running the 05 because it can be ported more than the 06 head

where do you come of saying that? i, as well as other members on here will probably wanna hear why you would say some bs comment like that. He is not that at all. he is a really nice person if you have ever had an actual conversation with him, just like heather.

WTF! I was @ the last national @ ballance and was the first time I ever talked to him and you are so wrong! He is an EXTREMELY nice gentleman. I was shocked actually @ how nice he was and how he was so willing to talk to us about his bike and the race. His wife is just as nice.

what, hes a cock bc hes doing well in the pro ranks and you couldnt even make it in a pro race? anyway, the first time i talked to joe was at the last high point national. he was sitting there in a lawn chair and saw me looking at his bike... next thing you know, he came over and started to talk to us like we were old pals. just as down to earth as you could be.

possibly another reason for racing the 04/05 is that the 06 hasnt been out as long as the 04/05's and has nowhere near as much R&D on it... which in turn would not give mechanics enough time to test engines and get higher numbers.

i still dont get where people thinks hes cocky. My dad and me went to the loretta lynns national and he was sittin at his trailor and we walked up to him and put his hand out to shake, and then later we were lookin at shirts at the end of the second day at the trailor that sells the national shirts and heather came up to us and talked to us like she had known us forever. They are some of the nicest people we have ever met. And we were talkin to one of the guys at the school and he worked at Abernathy's (sp) and he said when he talked to joe's mechanic that he WAS pushing upper 60 horsepower.

I think the reason Byrd is running an 04/05 instead of an 06 is because the 04/05 is a stroker engine, has more low end torque and a smoother powerband than the 06. This is what I've heard why some pro's prefer the 04/05 over the 06. The 06 stock head porting is to help gain back some of the loss of lowend torque. I'm not sure if DASA is getting more HP out of the 04/05 than an 06. 69 HP is an awesome number.:D

Does anyone no if Natalie run an 06???
