Does anyone know which street bike engine will work best in the 400ex frame?

Hehhehe, very little woods trail riding, mostly dunes. Hill climbs at the beach, racing at the beach, some trails on the beach.

I have someone that can do the install, just need to do a little research on engines, to see what would be the best. i.e set-up, torque, fit, vibration, that kind of stuff.

I would like to stick a Harley in a quad frame. Love the sound but don't think it would do very well, plus would have to work on it all the time.

I didn't say they were any good just like the sound.

If your gonna put a cbr 600 motor in a 400ex you are gonna have problems with the frame .... you gotta crame it in to the frame ...
There was a guy in dirt wheels that had to cut the frame in half to get a cbr 600 motor in it ..!! and said you'd be better off to make your own frame

That's the kind of info I am looking for... don't want to waste alot of time and money. I am thinking of doing this during the winter months.

I would cut out the bottom(or top) frame rails and make it so you would bolt them on to the frame. I saw this done before to get an gskr1000 in an lt500. If you needed more clearence you could make new tabs so the frame rails would bolt on lower if you really needed the room. Except for the cost an RC51 would be awesome. V-twin so probly less vibration too.

hey agian
If i were you i would cut the frame in half like top and bottom like the guy did in dirt wheels and then put a piece of pipe over the frame rails thats quite tight on the frame rails and then slide it over and then weld the frame rail and then slide the pipe over the weld and weld the pipe to the frame rails and then you should have a frame as strong if not stronger!!!!! and if you put a cbr 600 motor in a ex you need to put longer swing arm and different sprockets and like 2+ a-arms ok if you dont get that email me at bogart69er@hotmail.com or just add me on msn messanger if ya want . ok

there was a feature in one of the atv mags recently about a 600ex it had a f4i motor in it. It was built by Calo Racing, check out their website caloracing dot com, maybe you could contact them for some tips or they do sell complete bikes. Later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jabber also about the guy that had the cbr in the quad frame he had trouble because the engine uses a different chain then the 400ex so im not sure how he fixed that. Also he had trouble lining up the front and rear sprockets. He had to move the engine over to the left a lot to get them lined up. Im sure he had a lot of other problems too. I think instead of a street bike engine you are better off with a dirt bike engine. It will be a lot less work.

What dirt bike engine would be a good one that will have some serious power?

08-30-2002, 08:00 AM
XR650...

Will that bust nuts or just be faster than it is now? I want have slightly more power than I can handle...

Why don't you do a project like that KTM520. That would be a nice quad.

also some other things that calo racing did was a F3 powered banshee and a yamaha R1 in a quadzilla. The R1 was clocked at 167 MPH and runs a 9.96 @132 in the quarter mile. I think thats fast enough.

sorry for postin again but i just found the article. I dont think ur gunna be doin the CBR because it needs a lot of stuff. They had to make a custom airbox to fit the motor, a special 4 into one exhaust manifold, and adapters for 4 K&N air filters.

None of the things you metioned sounds difficult. Mounting the engine, making the mounts, and situationg it seams like it would be the hardest part.

hey jabber who do you have doing the installation? There was a CBR600 in a 400ex on Ebay that looked like you could Moto-X with it it was so cleanly installed....I also saw a banshee at winchester bay with a CBR900RR motor in it....very clean installation and balls to the wall power. Its not staying in the family but you could get a KX500 motor and get ported and bored and such...500+cc's of powervalved two stroke...sounds like a barrel of fun.

The harley motor wouldnt put you ahead of anyone...they only make like 65 horse and weigh alot....My EX and my Shee are just as fast as that thing would be.

My brother would do the installation. He lives right there in Eugene. He has his own shop, and can do most of that type of work.

I think I am going to go with the xr650 water cooled engine.
