Hey guys, I got that 400ex today! Im psyched, cant wait to go riding! Paid $1600 for a 2000 400ex, mostly stock. Its got a swingarm skid plate, and Pro Circuit slip-on, Razr tires in the front. The rear tires need to be replaced, but thats the only thing wrong with it. Ill post a picture tomorrow for sure.

Do I need to run high-octane fuel, or does it not matter? Also, should I buy specific oil from a Honda dealer, or can I just run basic motor oil?? Thanks for all the help guys, I look forward to being more involved in this site and definitely getting on my first Honda!

Amsoil 20-50 for oil. No you don't need to run race fuel, or high octane. You need that if you get a high compression piston, example: 10:1 piston = 93 octane, 11:1 = 50/50 mix, 12:1 = 50/50+ mix (more race fuel) 13:1 = I would run straight race fuel.

It's reccommened you use Fully Synthetic oil, well just what I have heard.

But for what octane gas, I would run 93, it burns cooler with stock comp piston.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I have mine bored to 426 and run 93 octane, I heard the same it helps it run a little cooler.
As far as oil, I've alway been a fan of synthetic oil, I'm running amsoil right now but its pricy. Don't use regular motor oil its got to be ATV motor oil. Do a search in other area about what oils to use and why. Regular oil will screw up your clutch.
Good luck with it,, slowly but surely you can start doing mods.

I used to run the oil the honda 10w 40 oil that honda recomends to use, but now I'm running the ams-oil 0w-40 and my quad has never ran any smoother than it does now... it is a bit on the pricy side, but I'll never change over!!!

How often do you guys change the oil, and how much does it take about??

I would suggest that you buy a Clymers Manual,, I got mine used but it was like brand new for only $10 shipped (bought it on here)
Even if you pay full price its worth it.

If I remember correctly, its 1.8 quarts for an oil change, but 2.? when you do a rebuild.

Someone else can verify..... I'm actually going onto Amsoil right now to renew my membership. 20W-50, they also sell filters etc.....
