My friend has a stock z400 and is in the process of buying K&N kit and exhaust. He wants more power. Should he just buy a 06 450r new or upgrade his z400? If he upgraded, he would buy a higher compression piston, cam, and and all that and keep the exhaust and K&N. which would have more power? He rides a lot of trails and occasional dunes.

thanks

Defantly just buy the 06 450r and grab the HRC kit while your at it.. Why spend thousands of dollars on a 400 motor and make it less reliable JUST to keep up with a 450.. save the money and spend it on something that you won't have to modify so much to the motor.. It will save in the long run.

what if he went all out and put the 440 big bore kit and everything.. would it still be worth it to get the 450r?

450ERRRRRR!

so your saying even if he spends thousands getting the 440 kit, high comp piston, cam exhaust and more it wont compare to a 450r with just hrc and exhaust? so should he just look into getting the r?

hahaha.. i kinda figured that the r would be better. but i think hed rather spend a couple thousand dollars for a quad with just as much power or almost qas much power as a $7000+ quad..

Get the R it's like graduating high school and moving into the real world. If he's gonna spend a couple thousand on a Z why not sell the Z and put it with that couple thou and buy a used R. A beat to death R is better than a new Z.

I don't know, my brother has a built Z440 w/ 12:1 compression, HotCams, LRD Exhaust, Dyna Ignition, ESR Intake and a 450R carb and he's really close to my built 450R(see sig).

so has anyone else had a built z400 and a 450r? i think the 450r would be faster but we ride mostly trails and would need more torque and bottom end than anything. which would have more power in the low rpms?

Let the guy put his K&N and exhaust on. If he still needs more then he will have to choose himself. How much more? Does he want to beat some of these other quads or just go fast through the trails. Trail riding is the great equillizer, I could keep up with my warrior trust me lol.

I have come across some really nice 440z's. The Z motor is a great platform for a big bore and the head can easily flow the extra CC's. I say build the Z. He keeps the bike he is familiar with, keeps reverse for trails, and he can still beat new 450s with an older "400". Even built, the Z motor is still very reliable.

Like I said though, I've come across some fast 440z's, if they are done right with a carb and cams too. How much could he get for the bike? Add the carb, cams, and bore and it's still less then a 450.

I dunno, everyone is saying the same thing but I'm just giving credit where credit is due, the Z is very buildable!

I have a good friend who is in the position that you are. He has spent over $2000 in his motor to make it a z440 13.5/1 piston, 39mm fcr carb, port and polist, both aftermarket cams and some other odds and ends.

It is definately fast from where it started being stock, but trust me it is NO 450R with an HRC kit. Not even close.

don't waste your money building up that thing, just buy new!!!

Well... I am in the same situation that your friend is in. I bought my Z new on Halloween 2005. It is bone stock, and I want to get into mx racing. I am going to get a 450r. There are many good reasons. The Z has proven to be no slacker, but its max potential under the 450 cc limit has proven to be the Yoshi 450 kit. Generally, if your lucky you will get around 55 hp. That is at very high compression and will be requiring rebuilds roughly every 15-25 hours, unless you are lucky. The 450r has proven to hit around 65 hp built with the same reliability. With just bolt ons you can get about the power of the built Z with way better reliability. I am seeing built yfz's and r's going for 4-6k used. This is fully suspended and piped. If you are patient, you can get a great deal. The Z also has a major frame issue. There are many reasons to go with the 450r or YFZ. I know I will be making the switch.

The 450r frames aren't great either, I don't think they are quite as bad as the first year Zs but I have seen majority of people who race crack them. so far I have been lucky.
