Hi all how's it going? I have a cracked carrier housing on my 2004 KFX 400..

How the hell do I get that out of there to replace it?

Do I need to take the whole axle off before it will slide out.

Is there anything that I should do while it's out?
Bearings etc.

Is this common?

Sadly it is common.

You will have to remove the axle first. Take everything off the left side. First the tire, then the hub. Then loosen the axle nuts, take them off, and slide the sprocket and hub off. Lastly take off the brake caliper via 2 12mm bolts. Slide the axle out the other side.

Take off the 4 bolts holding the carrier in and it will slide right out.

Could be a good time to do axle bearings if they feel loose or dont turn nicely anymore.

Hey, This would be great opportunity to replace it with a tapered bearing carrier. However, I havent heard of one for the Z yet, but there are plenty of others in this forum that may know. Unfortunately, you do need to remove the axle first. It is pretty easy, like kc300ex said. just remove everything from the brake side.

I figured.. as much but as I get older I tend to try and not just tear into things and make the process worse..

The bearings sounds like a good thing to replace anyway and they are cheap

Thanks for your advice and time..
