howdy guys.. i'm new to the forum.
i just bought an 87 250x, it has nerf bars, a skidplate, new tires.. its in wicked shape.. what should i do to it first?
i was thinking i might get rid of the rev limiter first, but i might leave it on there as i do alot of trail riding and run into quite a few mud holes so i dont want to blow her up.
maybe a pipe/jet kit first? what should i look for in a pipe?
please help me out, i dont know what to do first!

i would recomend not takeing out the rev limiter. you should get a pipe ,jet kit ,and a filter. that will help a bit performance wise.

what kind of pipe should i go for?
i'm kind of strapped for cash, what kind are good quality but on the cheap-er end?
i'm not talking cobra cheap, but like mid-to-low priced range?
i do know a few people that work at a honda dealer so i might be able to get some discounts

Well, If it was me, i'd change the oil ... do all that neccasary maintainence first. Then, definetly a pipe and jet kit. I know a guy maybe like half a mile away that has and 87 250x. i used to have a 91 but i parted it out. But anyway he's got a DG pipe on his and it sounds pretty good. I dont know where you ride but, is noise a problem?

yeah i would like it on the quiet side.. i tend to drive on the roads alot so i dont wanna attract any more attention than normal.
i plan to change all that jazz the oil and whatnot as well, i just wanna know what cheap performance mods i can do to her

Don't cheap out on the pipe.
It's probably the biggest power increase you're going to see on the 300ex without getting into major motor work.

I always reccomend getting a full system, or a header/slipon combo. Avoid using the stock header.. it's very restrictive.

Of course, you can always get a slip-on (like the HMF), and upgrade the header later with White Brothers or FMF.

i would go with a white bros full exhaust and a k&n air filter to start.

I agree. I have a white bros exhaust, and k&n on a 87 250x, and it made a good increase in power. You can also add disks to quiet it down a bit. A few things to keep an eye on 87s are the front shock mounts, and 3rd gear is week.
your guad looks mint, do you have any bigger pics?
Ill take some pics of my exhaust tomarrow, so you can see what it looks like.

give me your email and i'll send you some pics, then maybe you can post them?
i have no power at home as i am in the middle of moving so i only have access at work.

wow.. that 250 looks identical to mine other than the pipe lol.

i took a look at the shock mounts and sure enough, the frame is cracked just above one of the front ones.
i'm gonna patch it for now and come winter i'll park her in the garage, strip it down completely, fix it right, maybe gusset and pc the frame, clean everything up.. you wont recognise her next spring.

but for now.. how could i temporarily fix it till winter? i'm only gonna be riding another 3 months or so then its hittin the garage.. i dont hit a whole lot of jumps, a fair few, i mainly just ride rough trails and railroad tracks.

my brother in law welded mine up for me in about 10 mins. If you take iot to a local welding shop they should do the same. Just take the front plastic and gas tank off(easy of welding) If you want, stick a rag in the air inlet of the frame so no sparks go down into the airbox.( some people clean there stock filters with gas) Then hit it silver spary paint till you pc it.

the crack is about 1/4 of an inch above the top front shock mount.. i have a welder and can weld, just wondering if it will last or if i should wrap some steel around it and weld like a brace or something..
i think it cracked when i nose dived her into a ditch and landed on my head.. it landed straight on the front end..

Mine cracked in the same spot. I had someone weld the crack and also weld 1 1/4" x 3/16" steel angle on the back side of it. No problems since.

yeah i just had it welded and it seems pretty strong.. now i just need to rebuild the top end, fix the carrier and brakes.. then sell the damn thing. lol
